Westmont 1-2 punch too much for Saints
By Dick Sparrer
Jason Miller figured he had a pretty good one-two pitching punch at Westmont this spring.

The veteran baseball coach that returner Ricky Meinhold would be a top hurler—after all, the 6-foot-1 senior had won the Junior of the Year award in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League a year ago when the Warriors won the division championship.

But he was also looking forward to the addition of transfer Zach Brehm to the staff. The senior southpaw was coming in from Valley Christian to join the Westmont mound corps, and Miller was excited at the prospect of throwing Meinhold and Brehm back-to-back.

That's what he did last week, and it resulted in a couple of Mt. Hamilton Division victories for the Warriors in a couple of close games against Santa Teresa.

Westmont opened the week with a 2-1 win over the Saints on a four-hitter by Meinhold, then the Warriors finished the year with a tight 1-0 win over Santa Teresa when Brehm wen the distance.

Meinhold was untouchable on Wednesday when he scattered four hits and struck out 10 on his way to a win over the Saints. The left-hander gave up a single run in the second, but the Warriors got two back in the home half of the seventh to pull out the win. Meinhold pushed his season record to 3-1 with the win.

Meinhold also led the six-hit offensive attack for the Warriors with a couple of singles.

Brehm took the mound on Friday and fired a four-hitter for a 1-0 win over the Saints. A single run in the fourth by the Warriors was all Brehm needed to nail down the win, pushing his mound record to 3-1. He struck out eight in the game.

Meinhold was again the top hitters for the Warriors, belting two of Westmont's seven hits.

The Warriors, 3-1 in league play and 10-4 for the year, will face Oak Grove twice in league play this week. Westmont was to visit the Eagles on April 6 and will host Oak Grove on April 8, 3:30 p.m.

Westmont will compete in the North Monterey County Tournament April 1017. The Warriors take on Monterey (9 a.m.) and Pacific Grove (11:30 a.m.) in a double-header on April 10 at Gavilan College in Gilroy before facing Castro Valley on April 12, 4 p.m., at Robert Louis Stevenson.

In other action in the division, Prospect lost twice last week to Leigh, losing 8-0 and 15-2.

The Panthers could manage just one hit in the first game of the week and only two in the second. The Panthers slipped to 0-4 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

Prospect also lost 7-2 to Homestead last week in the first round of the Cupertino Lions Tournament.

Over in the Santa Teresa Division, Del Mar slipped to 0-8 in league play, losing 12-8 to Branham and 7-6 to Pioneer. But the Dons gave both the Bruins and Mustangs a real run for their money last week.

Branham seemed to be cruising, opening up an 8-0 lead with a run in the first, four in the second and three in the third on Wednesday. But Del Mar came charging back with three in the home half of the third and four in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-7. The Bruins were able to chip away for the win, though, with a run in the fifth and three in the seventh.

Senior Jason Okamoto homered in the game for the Dons.

Del Mar actually took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh before losing to Pioneer on Friday.

The Dons rallied for two in the second and two more in the third to lead 4-0 before the Mustangs picked up two in the third and one in the fourth.

Del Mar added to its lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh, but Pioneer answered with four in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the hard-earned victory.

Senior Eric Stevenson had three hits in the game for the Dons.

McKenzie leads Panthers

David McKenzie won medalist honors in back-to-back matches to lead the Prospect golf team to a pair of Santa Teresa Division wins over Yerba Buena last week.

McKenzie carded a 1-over par 37 to lead the Panthers to a 247-290 win over the Warriors at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Course, and he came back with a 4-over 40 at San Jose Muni in a 271-281 win over YB. The Panthers are now 4-4 in division play.

Del Mar pushed its Santa Teresa Division record to 5-3 with two wins over Andrew Hill.

Matt Lara fired a 36 on the par-30 Deep Cliff Golf Course to lead the Dons to a 218-239 win, and Tyler Adair shot a 43 on the par-34 Los Lagos Golf Course in a 266-295 win over the Falcons.

Westmont lost twice in Mt. Hamilton Division play last week, falling 212-231 and 217-219 to Pioneer.

Warriors win 2 of 3

There were three tight games for the Westmont girls softball team in Mt. Hamilton Division play last week, and the Warriors won two of the three.

Sophomore hurler Whitney Morris was the winning pitcher for Westmont in a 1-0 win over Independence, and junior veteran Breanna Kuhny picked up the win in a 2-1 victory over Leigh.

But the Warriors dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in eight innings to Oak Grove to open the week, despite a brilliant pitching performance by Kuhny.

Morris gave up just two hits and struck out six in six innings of work to get the win against the 76ers. Kuhny came on in the seventh to pick up the save.

A run-scoring single by senior catcher Renee Anderson in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the game.

Kuhny went the distance to flip a three-hitter for Westmont in the 2-1 win over Leigh.

The Longhorns scored a run in the first, and it remained 1-0 until the Warriors picked up a run in the fourth. The game was tied 1-1 when sophomore third sacker drilled a two-out single in the seventh to knock in the game winning run. Britton had three hits in the game.

Kuhny gave up just four hits in eight innings, but it was the double she allowed in the eighth that proved the difference in the 1-0 loss to Oak Grove.

Junior second baseman Rachel Gellman doubled and tripled to account for two of Westmont's three hits in the game.

The Warriors, 3-1 in the division and 7-7 for the year, were to visit Mt. Pleasant on April 6 and will host Santa Teresa on April 8, 3:30 p.m., in a couple of league games.

In Santa Teresa Division play last week, Willow Glen blanked Del Mar 4-0. The Dons could manage just one hits in the loss, as they slipped to 1-1 in the division.

Prospect, meanwhile, lost 9-1 to Evergreen Valley in the West Valley Division. The Panthers are 0-2 in league play.
