Okazaki, Ng-Parish nail league volleyball honors
By Bob Scudder
"Against all odds" might just describe how Willow Glen's Zach Hopkins did it.

Although he missed part of league volleyball season with an injury and his Willow Glen Rams finished in fourth place, Hopkins displayed enough skills and talent to be honored as the Most Valuable Player in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The award typically goes to a key player on the championship team.

Joe Porsche of Oak Grove was selected as Senior of the Year and his teammate Taua Iosefa was honored as Sophomore of the Year. They both helped lead the Eagles to a 22-8 overall record, a 14-2 league mark and the division championship.

Junior of the Year was awarded to Danny Okazaki of Prospect and John Ng-Parish of Westmont was Freshman of the Year. Oak Grove's Pat Geary was chosen as Coach of the Year.

Leland and Branham battled their way to a tie for second place in the league, only one match behind Oak Grove. Both teams received two selections each to the all-league first team. Nailing down those spots were senior Noah Hall and junior Sam Lee of Leland and seniors Josh Garcia and Zach Garcia of Branham.

Additional selections on the first team were senior Justin Ble of Willow Glen, seniors Joseph Su and David Su of Oak Grove and junior Kris Johnson of Leigh.

Earning second team honors were seniors Justin Curry and Steve McGaughy of Willow Glen, senior Jeff Kwok and junior Tommy Pham of Leland, senior Stan Blekh of Branham, senior Brooks Elliot of Prospect, senior Nick Gonzalez of Oak Grove and senior Bradlee Petzak of Gunderson.
