It's time to lace up the cleats and break out the bats and balls—it's softball season again. And the Westmont Warriors are looking forward to a good year.
"We have three returning pitchers and an experienced infield which will give the team excellent defense," said head coach Jon Hennig.
Westmont has five returning varsity players this year, including two all-leaguers.
Senior Allyson Carrothers is a three-year varsity veteran and a returning all-league first baseman for the Warriors. Teammate Rachel Gellman, also a senior and a comeback all-leaguer, is a returning two-year veteran who can play both second base and outfield.
"The team expects good offensive production from returning all-leaguers Gellman and Carrothers," said Hennig.
Also returning are Ashley Britton, a junior two-year varsity shortstop; Breanna Kuhny, a senior three-year varsity pitcher; and Lisa Parola, a senior three-year veteran outfielder and third baseman.
Westmont also has a handful of returning juniors who have only one year of varsity experience under their belts: outfielders Sami Brown and Sami Horn, pitcher/outfielder Lillian Davis and pitcher Whitney Morris.
Coming up from the junior varsity squad are sophomore second baseman Samantha Antolin, senior outfielder Amanda Boyer and junior outfielder Emily Scott.
Westmont also has two freshmen that will be a part of the varsity this season—centerfielder Robyn Araujo and catcher Jacque Kuhny.
Dons Spring Classic
Thus far Westmont has won two games, both in the Dons Club Spring Classic hosted by Del Mar. The Warriors defeated Evergreen Valley 4-0 and topped Presentation 4-2. They were to face Los Altos at home on March 8.
The host Dons have played three games in the tournament, beating Latino College Prep 10-0 before losing to Notre Dame 8-0 and Presentation 7-0. They were to face the Santa Clara at home on March 8.
Del Mar has a "new coaching staff and new outlook," says head varsity softball coach Bill Murray. "We are looking forward to a fresh start. We have a young, but talented team this year."
The Dons are coming off of a 4-14 record overall last season and a 3-7 finish in league, ending up fifth in six team league race.
Del Mar has four seniors this year, but only two are returning varsity players. One of those returners is first team all-league shortstop Madison Sales. The other returning senior on the team is outfielder Emilie Johnson.
Aside from the seniors, there are four returning varsity players this year: sophomore first baseman Kellene Condie, sophomore third sacker Courtney Pollak, junior centerfielder Kelsey Martinez and sophomore pitcher Farrah Gangloff.
Joining the varsity for the first time are seniors Alex Torres, who plays both infield and outfield, and outfielder Gladia Castro. Junior infielder Amanda Lowenstein and sophomore infielder/outfielder Ashlynn Polini join freshmen Anna Myers (second base), Angelina Gomez (catcher) and Amy Van (pitcher) on the varsity squad.
Westmont wins two
The Westmont baseball team opened league play last week with back-to-back wins over Willow Glen in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Warriors opened division play with a 3-1 win over the Rams on Wednesday, then beat Willow Glen 8-6 on Saturday in a make-up for a Friday afternoon rainout.
Westmont is 3-2 overall in the young season. The Warriors beat Valley Christian of Dublin 9-3 but lost to Valley Christian of San Jose 9-3 in the Mission City Classic Tournament, and lost 8-4 to Livermore in a non-league game.
The Warriors will get back into league play this week when they play two 3:30 p.m. games against Branham—at Branham on March 9 and at home against the Bruins on March 11.
