The Del Mar Dons ended their 2005 campaign with a 40-0 loss to Seaside Friday night in the Central Coast Section Small School Division playoffs.
The Dons fell behind 6-0 just 50 seconds into the game when Seaside's Michael Clemmons sprinted 78 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.
The Dons defense would hold off the attack of the Monterey Bay League champions for the rest of the quarter, but the powerful Spartans would strike twice in the second quarter to take a 20-0 halftime lead.
Early on, the speed and power of the Spartans front seven held the Dons attack in check. Emmanuel Sellu managed to gain only 51 yards on 13 carries in the half. The rest of the Dons managed only 30 yards.
Dons quarterback Todd Myers was under pressure all night, and was sacked three times for losses of 26 yards in the first 24 minutes.
Meanwhile, Clemmons alone had gained 188 yards and ran for three scores for the Spartans. He would be limited to just three carries in the second half, but the Spartans would show that they have other weapons.
The Dons came out for the second half determined to get back in the game. Taking the ball at their own 32, they used Sellu to drive down the field on the Spartans. The drive would end when a Myers pass from the Spartan 16 was intercepted near the goal line by none other than Clemmons, who returned the ball to the Seaside 7-yard line.
The Dons had picked up four first downs on the drive which opened with an 18-yard run by Sellu. Two more Sellu runs of five and six yards and an 11-yarder by Mike Huynh put the Dons in a first and 10 from the Spartan 16. Prior to the interception Sellu was stopped for no gain.
Following the turnover, Seaside drove 93 yards for a crushing score; this time it was quarterback Jermaine Carter hooking up with wide receiver Rahmod Johnson from eight yards out, capping the drive.
Carter would score a 25-yard run with 2:34 left in the third quarter and his two-point conversion run would make it 34-0.
On the subsequent drive, the Dons would again make a strong effort to get on the board. Myers would hit Abad Faour for a 13-yard gain on third and two, giving the Dons a first down on the 38. The drive would quickly stall after two Ginikachi Ibe runs would gain only three yards. Myers would connect with Fabian Diaz on third down but the completion would gain just four yards.
Following a short punt, the Spartan reserves found the end zone with third-team tailback Reggie Johnson scoring from 15 yards out with 8:50 to play.
Again the Del Mar would go to work, cheered on by a large group of upbeat fans that traveled to the Monterey Peninsula to support the Dons.
It looked like the Dons would reward their fans late in the game. Two seven-yard carries on second down by Faour and Myers, along with another seven-yard effort from Sellu in a third down situation, moved the ball to the Spartan 41.
Sellu would then gain 16 yards on second and 17. On the next play the ball would come loose on a pitch play that Sellu scooped up nine yards behind the line of scrimmage, ending the final Don threat.
Sellu finished the game with 28 carries for 130 yards.
"I'm proud of our defense," said Seaside head coach Alfred Avila. "We contained a great back tonight. Since the second half of the Palma game (in week five) we have shut down everyone." In six games the Seaside defense has given up just three touchdowns, while earning three shutouts.
