Weimer hits 52 points in Westmont win
By Dick Sparrer
Scoring 52 points and ripping down 17 rebounds is more than most high school basketball players do in a two-game week. Those would even be impressive numbers for a talented player like Westmont's Michael Weimer.
But that's not what Weimer did last week for the Warriors--it's what he did last Wednesday night.
The big 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior forward poured in an incredible 52 points to lead the Warriors to an 87-67 win over Evergreen Valley on Feb. 7 in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game.
Weimer tossed in five three-point buckets among his 19 field goals, and he was 9 of 10 at the free-throw line on the way to his incredible night.
The Westmont senior did more than score. He also pulled down a team-high 17 rebounds, blocked three shots, dished off two steals and added an assist.
Max Schneider was Weimer's best pal on the night. The 5-foot-9 junior guard had only four points, but he handed out 16 assists in the game--most of them to Weimer. Schneider also had three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot, and he was 2 of 2 at the line.
Dominik Arbet supported Weimer offensively. The 5-foot-8 freshman guard tossed in five shots from the field on his way to an 11-point night. He added nine boards, a steal and three assists.
James Weimer made it a 61-point, 27-rebound game for the family, chipping in nine points and hauling in 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 sophomore also had a three-pointer.
Darrien Broadnax added seven points, including a three, and had nine rebounds, four steals and four assists. Brian Bangs and Patrick Barton had two points apiece.
Things didn't go as well for Weimer and the Warriors later in the week. Westmont dropped a 58-56 heartbreaker to Pioneer to slip to 5-7 in the division and 15-9 for the year.
Broadnax had the hot hand in this one with 23 points, including eight at the line and a three-pointer. Arbet and J. Weimer each joined him in double digits with 11 apiece. Arbet hit a three.
M. Weimer had only seven points for the Warriors and Schneider hit four.
The Warriors were to challenge first-place Oak Grove on Feb. 14 and will close out the league season at Leigh on Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m.
In other Mt. Hamilton action last week, Prospect split a pair of games--beating Evergreen 68-48 before losing a 51-50 cliffhanger to Santa Teresa--to slip to 5-7 in league play and to 13-11 for the year.
Zach Stevenson was the big scorer for the Panthers in the win over the Cougars to close out the week. The 6-foot senior had three threes among 12 field goals on his way to a 27-point night for Prospect.
Chris Kim supported with 12 points, including four at the line, and Kendall Hendon added 10, including two threes.
Calvin Garduque, Joey Akeley and Eric Chang had five points each, and Natnael Taye and David Matusewicz hit two apiece. Garduque and Akeley each popped threes.
Earlier in the week Kim buried 14 and Hendon canned 13, but the Panthers lost by one to Santa Teresa. Kim and Hendon drained two threes apiece in the game.
Stevenson added eight to the cause, Taye six, Akeley four, Chang three and Jason Ohlhaver two.
The Panthers, who were to host Pioneer on Feb. 14, will finish up the league season at Oak Grove on Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m.
Del Mar, meanwhile, continued to roll through the BVAL's West Valley Division. The Dons hammered James Lick 77-47 and knocked off San Jose Academy 57-47 to push their record to 12-0 in the division and to 19-4 for the year.
Stevone Jones pumped in 22 points, including a pair of threes, to lead the Dons to the lopsided 30-point win over Lick. Dallin Blank was close behind with 17 points, including three threes, and Arron Mollet had 14 with two threes. Max Heckmann joined the three in double digits with 11 points.
Travis Masterbone had a three among his seven points, Nick Bourdens hit four and Jake Steeves had two.
Mollet was the scoring leader for the Dons in the win over San Jose. He tossed in 16 points, six coming at the line. Bourdens finished with 12 points and Jones had 11.
Heckmann added eight, Masterbone four and Blank, Steeves and Gerald Manabat two each.
The Dons, who were to visit Gunderson on Feb. 13, wrap up league play at home on Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m., against Yerba Buena.
