Alice Avenue home
is OK'd for remodel

The Historic Preservation Board approved a two-story addition for a Craftsman-style home in the Alice Avenue Historic District. Homeowner Michael Navone plans to add a second story to the rear of his 365-square-foot home, and a one-car garage.

This is his third application seeking approval. At the board's Feb. 28 meeting, Navone presented several designs, and the board chose the plan with the simplest roofline and only one gable. Preservation board commissioners wanted to make certain the integrity of the historic home was preserved.

The home has been listed on the city's historic registry. It was the former home of Hattie DePuy. The dwelling was constructed around 1930 for the unmarried sister of local druggist Lucian Beall. It is believed Otis Hyde, the son of George and Alice Hyde, built the house.

City offers loans
for home repairs

Campbell is offering low-interest loans to residents to make their homes structurally safer from earthquakes.

Homeowners can add a new roof or foundation, upgrade the electrical or plumbing system, or correct termite damage. About 25percent of the loan can be used for cosmetic improvements, such as replacing worn appliances, flooring, carpeting and exterior or interior paint.

The loans have a 15-year repayment schedule, starting at a 3 percent interest rate. The maximum amount available for single-family homes is $40,000, and $15,000 for mobile homes.

Loan eligibility is based on the maximum household income and family size for the last 12 months. The maximum income for a household of one is $59,400 and a household of four is $84,900.

For more information, contact Sharon Teeter, the city's housing coordinator at 408.866.2137.
