Nocera, Amii lead Westmont to track win
By Dick Sparrer
What worked for the Westmont boys track and field team last week against Live Oak didn't work as well for the Westmont girls.
Double winners Brian Nocera and Mike Amii sparked the Warriors to a 76-51 victory over the Acorns in boys dual meet action in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
But despite getting two wins apiece from Christine Ristow and Morgan Rumzie, the Westmont girls lost 71-55 to Live Oak.
The win left the boys 5-2 in the dual meet season and the girls 4-3 heading into the BVAL division finals this week. Both the Westmont teams were to return to the Lincoln track on May 1 and 3 for the BVAL finals, with the top placers there advancing to the BVAL championship meet on May 10 at Mt. Pleasant. From there, the top male and female placers in each event advance to the Central Coast Section semifinals May 19 at San Jose City College.
Nocera and Amii paced Westmont to the win in the dual meet season-ender against the Acorns.
Nocera sprinted to individual wins in the 100 in 11.3 and the 200 in 23.3, and he also teamed with Trevor Vlay, Dominik Arbet and Marko Vatavuk for a victory in the 4x100 relay in 45.0.
Amii was a twin winner in the jumps, taking the long jump with a 20-4 effort and the triple jump with a leap of 39-7.
Vatavuk supported with a win in the 110 high hurdles in 15.8. Kevin Blakley was first in the high jump at 6-2, and Sean Hutchison won the shot put with a heave of 41-10.
The Westmont girls also had a couple of twin winners on the day, but they were the only individual winners for the Warriors.
Ristow raced to wins in the 400 in 59.0 and the 300 hurdles in 48.5, and Rumzie won the long jump at 15-7 and the triple jump at 30-10. Ristow also joined with Katie Alford, Kimia Etemadi and Christine Dupic for a win in the 4x100 relay.
Over in the West Valley Division, Del Mar wrapped up the dual meet season with boys and girls wins over Yerba Buena. The Dons topped the Warriors 70-57 in the boys meet and 83-43 in the girls meet.
The Dons will compete in the BVAL West Valley Division finals on May 4 at San Jose Academy before heading to Mt. Pleasant for the May 10 BVAL meet.
Sophomore Kevin Kapchuk won three events, and senior Arron Mollet took two to lead the Del Mar boys past the Warriors last week.
Kapchuk romped to wins in the 100 in 11.85, the 200 in 23.60 and the 110 high hurdles in 16.32. He also helped the Dons to a win in the 4x100 relay in 45.40.
Mollett topped the high jump at 6-2 for a win and was also first in the long jump with an 18-9.5 effort.
Supporting with firsts for Del Mar were juniors Bob Schooler in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.81, Steve Lee in the shot put at 41-10.5 and Tim Stanislao in the triple jump at 40-0.5.
The Dons also took the 4x400 relay in 5:09.
Starring for the Del Mar girls at Yerba Buena were juniors Lauren Pagendarm, Kat Peterson and Ashley Hines.
Pagendarm was a triple winner for the Dons, taking the 110 hurdles in 19.22, the 300 hurdles in 55.94 and the high jump at 4-8.
Peterson sprinted to wins in the 100 in 12.34 and the 200 in 30.34. She also helped the Dons to a victory in the 4x100 relay in 55.01.
Hines heaved the shot put 29-9.5 for a Del Mar win, and she also tossed the discus 90-4 for a first.
