Residents enjoy holiday celebration at Quinlan Center
Cupertino residents got into the holiday spirit early this year attending a free holiday party on Dec. 18 at the Quinlan Center. About 140 people showed up for lunch and entertainment, hosted by council members Patrick Kwok and Michael Chang, as well as Mayor Richard Lowenthal and Barry Chang board member of the Cupertino Union School District.
The Monta Vista High School Band played background music and the Regnart Elementary School Choir performed while people enjoyed Chinese food prepared by Marina Foods.
Kwok said city officials are exploring the possibility of having a Lunar Year parade sometime in late February and are forming a committee to work out the details.
Fine arts grant deadline is Feb. 15
Aspiring artists and art organizations seeking fine arts grants have until Feb. 15 to apply for the first cycle awarded by the Cupertino Fine Arts Commission. The selection criteria is based on a number of questions, including whether it encourages diverse fine arts programs, provides for evaluation and accountability, serves a wide range of citizens or groups not already served, and expands fine arts activities in the community. All first cycle grants will be awarded in April.
Those interested in applying should contact the Cupertino city clerk's office at 408.777.3223 or visit www.cupertino. org/finearts/grants.htm.
YMCA membership breaks, scholarships
In the wake of the Sept. 11 attack and the recent economic downturn, the YMCA is offering to help families with memberships. Families whose head of household or employed spouse has been called into active duty by the National Guard or Reserves can apply for complimentary YMCA memberships.
The Y will also help current members who have been laid off because of the recession by finding a way to continue their membership through scholarships and financial assistance. The Y assures its members that all information will be kept strictly confidential and each membership handled on a case-by-case basis.
Additional information is available from local YMCA branches, or by calling 408.288.YMCA.
