    Sheriff's Report

The following incidents were culled from reports filed by deputies at the sheriff's Westside Substation.

On acid--Dec. 11, 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., Target, 20745 Stevens Creek Boulevard. Somebody poured a caustic, acid-like liquid on a Mercedes and an Audi in the parking lot. The chemical was strong enough to etch away the paint from where it touched the cars, exposing bare metal in places. No suspects were spotted.

Church thefts--Dec. 11, 11:30 p.m., Bethel Lutheran Church, 10181 Finch Avenue. Someone stole about $1,185 worth of microphones and audio equipment from the church auditorium sometime during the day, while the church and school were open for business. No signs of forced entry were found. It was the third theft of audio equipment in two months, and similar to another theft Dec. 19 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, on Homestead Road, where a $200 VCR and two $150 microphones were stolen.

Share the road with shoplifters--Dec. 13, 9:10 p.m., Target, 20745 Stevens Creek Boulevard. A male customer put two CD players and a sweatshirt in his backpack, then hopped on a mountain bike that was on display and rode out through the front doors. Store employees and two customers chased, captured and detained the suspect, and all of the merchandise was recovered.

Rocky road--Dec. 14, 5:40 p.m. and 7:25 p.m., Westlynn Drive. Someone threw a rock at a passing car on Westlynn Drive at Heatherwood Drive, shattering a side window. The driver saw a possible suspect run away when she stopped and got out, but nobody was later caught. A couple hours later and a block away, on Westlynn Drive at De La Forge Drive, someone tossed a rock at another car, also shattering a side window. The driver saw two men sitting on a porch near where she thought the rock came from, but no suspects were identified.

Missing Macs--Dec. 15, Apple Computer, 1 Infinite Loop. Someone stole seven iMacs (worth a total of $12,000) from two rooms sometime between July and September. Apple security questioned most of the 200 employees with access to the rooms, but found no suspects.

Video bike-off--Dec. 16, 11:52 a.m., Ritz Camera, Vallco. A white male about 19 or 20 asked the manager about buying an $800 palm-sized video camera, then when the manager turned his back, ran out of the store with the demo camera and out of the mall, then hopped on his mountain bike and headed off eastbound down Stevens Creek Boulevard. Suspect is still at large.

Computer cat burglar--Dec. 20, 11:35 p.m., Collins School, 10301 Vista Drive. Suspect used a metal pipe to break the safety wire glass out of a door to a computer room, then took a computer from that room and another from the library. Whether something else was taken may not be determined until school is back in session.
