Grants for Arts deadline Feb. 15

The Cupertino Fine Arts Commission is seeking local artists to submit applications until Feb. 15, for grants to be awarded by the Commission in April. The commission will evaluate the proposals based on whether they serve a wide range of citizens or groups not already served. The commission will also look at whether the proposal would extend the range of fine arts activities and encourage diverse programs for the city of Cupertino. Proposals must also include provisions for measuring success and financial accountability. For more information, contact the city clerk at 408.777.3223.

School Zone Crackdown from Jan. 8 to 12

The Santa Clara County Police Chief's Association has designated the week of Jan. 8 to Jan. 12, 2001, as the first ever countywide School Zone Crackdown. The association hopes the event will alert parents, commuters, and children walking to school that the rules of the road still apply, and will be strictly enforced. Every day during the enforcement week, officers will patrol the problem school zones and make traffic stops for the purpose of education and enforcement. The teams will concentrate on violations of jaywalking, speeding, bicycle helmets, seat belts and other potential collision-causing violations.

Arrests up 24 percent over holidays

Santa Clara County's arrests for driving under the influence over the holiday season were up

24 percent, to 894. Injury crashes stand at 31, up from 23 that occurred last year. However, law enforcement agencies believe that the situation would have been much worse, if not for the interagency efforts of the Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties' law enforcement agencies. Over the holidays, 84 agencies set up 28 sobriety checkpoints over 11 nights. Similar efforts will be implemented for the Memorial and Labor Day holiday weekends, as well as again this time next year.
