Save the trees!

On Dec. 22 I was at the Market Place Shopping Center on Stevens Creek and saw a crew cutting down the first of 26 mature trees. I called Cupertino City Hall and found that nobody with any authority was there. These beautiful trees not only gave charm to the shopping center, but they also provided badly needed shade and helped filter out air pollutants.

I have since learned that the tree removal was approved by the council because the new owners wanted better visibility of the center from the street. I also found there was no discussion of alternate solutions.

So now we have another "plain Jane" strip mall like so many other ones in the valley.

If you do not want a similar situation in the future, call the city manager at 777-3212.
