Pioneers pin league win over Paly
Wen's 19 not enough for Mats to win

It's a match that's still a good four weeks away.
But you can bet that Jay Lawson and his Cupertino Pioneers are already thinking about it.
It's Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, but you can be sure there will no love match when the Pioneers travel to Los Gatos for what should be the championship bout in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Los Gatos, Cupertino and Fremont figured to be the pre-season title favorites in the division, and the Pioneers have already defeated the Firebirds. Now they're doing what they need to do to set up the Feb. 14 battle with the Cats as the match for the title.
What the Pioneers needed to do last week was beat Palo Alto, and they did so in convincing fashion, 55-7.
Cupertino lost in just two of the 14 weight classes--135 and 275--and nailed four pins in the other 12 bouts to claim the lopsided victory.
Byron Chan pinned in the first round at 119 pounds for the Pioneers, and Michael Joiner pinned in the third round at 215. Andrew Reese (171) and Ben Reynolds (189) each posted second-round falls for the Pioneers.
Sophomore Alex Wu won 9-0 at 103 pounds, Mitch Conley 10-0 at 112 and Ben Di Gregorio 5-0 at 140 for three shutout wins for Cupertino.
Sharam Rezazdeh cruised to an easy 10-2 win at 125 pounds and Brett Haraguchi rolled 10-1 at 130.
Jen-Hao Chen pulled out a tight 11-10 win at 145 pounds, Kayn Ramirez-Baker won 6-2 at 152 and David Kullman won 8-2 at 160.
Patrick Bialoglouski lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at 275 pounds and Ramy Louis lost 13-5 at 135 for Cupertino's only losses of the night.
The win helped the Pioneers improve to 2-0 in the division and to 7-0 in the dual-match season. Cupertino will be back on the mat Jan. 17 at Wilcox, 6:30 p.m., before competing in the Mid-Cal Tournament on Jan. 25 and 26 in Gilroy.
Girls basketball
Homestead lost a 37-35 heartbreaker to Gunn in girls basketball action in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL last week.
Senior Lauren Kitasoe pitched in 14 points, including a three-pointer, to lead the Mustangs, but it wasn't enough for Homestead.
Senior Stephanie Malcolm hit a pair of threes among her four field goals to finish with 10 points in the loss. Shannon Wong and Bonnie Berridge had four points apiece, Joanna Harris hit two and Lauren Tidwell had one.
The Mustangs, now 4-10 for the year, will host Los Gatos on Jan. 15, 7 p.m., and visit Fremont on Jan. 17, 7 p.m.
In El Camino Division play, Saratoga battled from behind to pull out a 54-37 win over Monta Vista.
The Matadors trailed 8-6 after a period but jumped out to an 18-15 lead by intermission. The Falcons took command, though, when they outscored the Mats 23-8 in the third period.
Sophomore guard Melanie Wen had the hot hand for the Matadors in the game. She finished with a team-high 19 points, popping a three among her eight field goals and adding two points at the free-throw line.
Deanna Sainten supported with nine points, most of it coming on seven free throws, and Diana Chien hit six points. Christine Yow had two points and Dana Underwood hit one.
The loss dropped Monta Vista to 0-3 in the El Camino Division and to 5-9 for the year.
Boys basketball
It was a good news, bad news week for the Cupertino boys basketball team. The Pioneers dropped a tough 37-35 decision to Monta Vista, but they came back to edge Saratoga 45-43 in the El Camino Division.
Arlan Tokugawa had four threes among his five field goals and he added seven points at the charity line to finish with a team-high 21 points in Cupertino's win over Saratoga. Joe Lordan supported with 11 points.
Golf for the Broncos
The Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament will be held on Jan. 25 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.
