Position is open on board of trustees
A vacancy in the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees was created when former Trustee Dolores Sandoval was elected to the Cupertino City Council. The board is now seeking applicants to fill that vacancy for the remainder of the term until the position is open for election in November 2003. Any applicants must be registered voters and reside within the district service area, which includes Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and portions of Saratoga, West San Jose and Santa Clara.
An orientation meeting for applicants is being held Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. in the District Board Room, 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. Those interested should contact Catherine Bauknight at 650.949.6102 for applications, deadline dates and information about the interview process and schedule.
CUSD holds Jan. 30 information night
The Cupertino Union School District will hold an Alternative Education Information Night on Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Parents who do not already have a child in a particular alternative program are required to attend this meeting and have a school tour before registering their child for an alternative program. Alternative programs are limited to in-district students or students of parents employed by the Cupertino Union Elementary School District or Fremont Union High School District. The registration is for all grades at Faria, McAuliffe and Portal for various alternative programs and the language immersion program in Mandarin for grades kindergarten through fourth at Collins.

Crab feed set for Feb. 15
Feeling crabby? The Cupertino Rotary has a solution-- Cheer up and head down to the Rotary Club of Cupertino's annual crab feed Feb. 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at St. Joseph's of Cupertino Catholic Church Parish Hall, 10110 N. De Anza Blvd.
All proceeds benefit the youth of Cupertino, including high school Interact programs, the rotary club's youth service programs, and Rotary Kid's Fishing Day.
Tickets cost $25 per person and are available at the Northwest YMCA, Cupertino National Bank, Alotta's Deli/Café, Cupertino Chamber of Commerce and from Cupertino Rotary members. For more information, call 408.252.5780.
Cupertino Bahá'í to hold World Religion Day
With America at war and trouble brewing in other countries, what better time to celebrate and recognize the world as one large community? The Cupertino Bahá'í community is sponsoring its sixth annual celebration of World Religion Day Jan. 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Quinlan Community Center. The theme of the program this year is "The Healing Power of Prayer," and is intended to bring the community together and recognize the positive spiritual values of all religions. Chamber welcomes new officers and members
The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce held its installation of officers Jan. 9 at city hall, with Mayor Richard Lowenthal as officiate of the ceremony. Council members Dolly Sandoval and Patrick Kwok also attended.
Officers for the 2002 term who were sworn in included Mark Burns, president-elect; Mike Foulkes, vice president, community relations; Ed Grant, vice president, finance; Janice Miyatake, vice president, membership; Wayne Okubo, vice president, special events; and Bill Jones, past president.
Among the newly elected, reelected and appointed board of directors, were Joe Hamilton, superintendent, Fremont Union High School District, continuing President JoAnn Leonard, and Lorie Prouty, Institute of Business and Industry, De Anza College. Others included Ed Grant, Richard Abdalah, Dave Howser, Bill Jones, Frances Seward and Vicky Tsai.
Other board members sworn in were Rick Callender, Keith Dias, John Giovanola, Jack Hubby, Aileen Low and Orrin Mahoney.
