Mustangs still unbeaten in league
Matadors get even in El Camino play

The boys basketball team at Homestead hit an important milestone last Friday night ... the halfway point in the schedule in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And why is that such an important milestone for the Mustangs? Well, this year they've gotten there undefeated.
Homestead wrapped up the first round of play in the El Camino Division with wins over Saratoga and Cupertino last week to improve to 6-0 in the league campaign.
The Mustangs open the second round of league play this week when they host Los Altos on Jan. 25, 7:30 p.m. A win in that one would be the 17th victory of the year and yet another milestone for the Mustangs--it would break the school record for most wins in a season.
Homestead beat Los Altos 81-56 in the first week of league play. They also beat Mountain View 63-53, Santa Clara 60-54 and Monta Vista 67-52 before rolling to the two wins last week over the Falcons and Pioneers.
Saratoga got off to a fast start in last Wednesday's clash at Homestead when the Falcons jumped out to a 10-6 first-quarter lead. But the Mustangs outscored 'Toga 35-19 over the next two periods, including a 13-4 run in the third.
Bryan Silverman poured in 16 points to lead all Homestead scorers in the win over the Falcons. Silverman buried 10 of his points at the free-throw line.
Brad Sasaki had a pair of three-pointers among his 12 points in the win, and Garren Strong finished in double digits with 11 points.
Tim Strombel supported with nine points in the win, Gus Gauntlett and Matt Johnson added four apiece and Armen Ekmekji had three.
Homestead came back two days later to outscore Cupertino in every period on the way to a 49-30 win.
Silverman and Sasaki shared scoring honors for the Mustangs with 16 points apiece. Both had a pair of threes in the game.
Strombel finished with seven points, Gauntlett and Johnson four apiece and Ekmekji two.
The Mustangs, 16-4 for the year, play an upbeat tempo and stress defense. Leading the defensive effort for the Mustangs are Sasaki and Randy Chang.
Matadors get even
Two big wins last week helped the Monta Vista girls basketball team get even in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
The Matadors edged Santa Clara 37-34 and turned back Cupertino 34-23 to even their record at 3-3 in the division and push their season mark to 8-10.
Monta Vista battled back from a one-point halftime deficit to pull out the win over the Bruins. Sophomore guard Melanie Wen netted 16 points to lead the Mats, including a couple of threes.
Rekha Arakeri had three three-pointers among her 14 points in the Monta Vista win. Deanna Sainten added four points for the Mats, Ani Bagdasarian had two and Julia Bonin hit one.
Wen hit a three and finished with nine points to lead the Matadors past the Pioneers. Sainten added eight points for the Mats, Bagdasarian hit seven, Arakeri and Diana Chien four apiece and Gina Sainten two.
Firebirds top Mustangs
In girls basketball action last week, Fremont rolled to a 44-32 win over Homestead in Sunnyvale.
Sophomore Mandy Wald buried 17 points for the Mustangs to lead all scorers in the game.
Jenelle Kitasoe had six points, Elyse Maru four, Kelly Dasilva three and Shannon Wong two. Dasilva had a three-pointer for Homestead.
The Mustangs had dropped a 38-20 decision to Los Gatos to open the week. The Wildcats outscored Homestead in every period in the low-scoring game.
Wald, Stephanie Malcolm, Maru and Wong had four points each for the Mustangs and Kitasoe and Lauren Tidwell added two apiece.
Homestead will try to get back on the winning track this week when the Mustangs visit Los Altos for a 6 p.m. game that's part of a quad-header.
