    CCS seeks volunteers

    Cupertino Community Services is in need of volunteers to contribute in a variety of ways. CCS depends on volunteers from the community to ensure that the organization can provide services and support to those in need.

    Some of the ways volunteers can help are by picking up food from local grocery stores; distributing food at its food pantry; being a translator for its diverse group of clients; and helping out with fundraising events.

    CCS is the local chapter of United Way, taking care of approximately 7,000 people in Cupertino, Campbell, Saratoga, Los Gatos and West San Jose.

    Superintendent retires from FUHSD

    Superintendent Joe Hamilton announced his retirement Jan. 15 after serving for five years on the Fremont Union High School District. He joined the school district 10 years ago and has been involved with public education for the past 37 years.

    During his five years as superintendent, the district has become more focused on improving student performance, increasing the use of technology in instruction and school operations, improving of facilities and gaining the trust and respect of staff and the community.

    He and his wife plan to continue to live in Cupertino and remain active members of the community.

    Search continues for robbery suspect

    The San Jose Police Department has asked the public to help them identify an armed robbery suspect, who hasrobbed several gas stations, markets, mail stations and a dry cleaner in the San Jose, Fremont, Santa Clara and Campbell areas. He has also robbed a bank in Cupertino.

    Authorities describe the suspect as a Hispanic male, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet, 4 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 150-180 pounds, with black hair and a medium to dark complexion. The suspect wears a gray athletic jacket with blue sleeves and sometimes wears a dark baseball cap. His vehicle is a 1987 to 1989 BMW, possibly a 325E, possibly silver, with stolen license plates that read 4PIT926.

    Anyone with information is asked to call detective Jeff Ensile of the San Jose Police Department Robbery Unit at 408.277.4166. Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 408.947.7867.

    St. Joseph's Open House

    St. Joseph's of Cupertino school will host its annual open house Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon. St. Joseph's, located at 10120 N. De Anza Blvd., is committed to educating the "whole child," placing equal importance on the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and physical development of each unique child in grades K-8. Parent volunteers will conduct classroom tours and answer any questions. Students applying for enrollment will be tested during the first week in March.

    Those interested in enrolling may drop in during the open house or can contact the school at 408.252.6441.

    CUSD Information Night

    The Cupertino Union School District will hold an Alternative Education Information Night on Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Parents who do not already have a child in a particular alternative program are required to attend this meeting and have a school tour before registering their child for an alternative program. Alternative programs are limited to in-district students to students of parents employed by the CUSD or FUHSD. The registration is for all grades at Faria, McAuliffe and Portal for various alternative programs and language immersion program in Mandarin for grades kindergarten through fourth at Collins.

    Crab feed set for Feb. 15

    The Rotary Club of Cupertino will hold its annual crab feed Feb. 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at St. Joseph's of Cupertino will hold its Catholic Church Parish Hall, located at 10110 N. De Anza Blvd.

    Tickets cost $25 per person and are available at the Northwest YMCA, Cupertino National Bank, Alotta's Deli/Café, Cupertino Chamber of Commerce and from Cupertino Rotary members. For more information, call 408.252.5780.
