    Saadati appointed to planning commission

    By GEORGE MOORE

Cupertino City Council members met Jan. 14 to interview applicants for vacancies on various city boards and commissions. Taghi Saadati was appointed to the planning commission, filling the seat vacated by new Patrick Kwok last December when he was elected to the council.

Mayor Richard Lowenthal dropped in on the planning commission meeting that same evening to make the announcement.

"We had 17 great applicants--you must be doing something right, because people want to do it with you," Lowenthal said. "It was a difficult choice because we had so many qualified people, but I think Taghi's going to be an excellent member of your team."

Saadati has lived in Cupertino and worked for the city of San Jose for almost 17 years as a section manager. He has been responsible for various projects involved with public works, parks and environmental projects.

"I'm very pleased," Saadati said. "Hopefully, I can serve the community in the best possible way. I've been living in this community for a long time, and my experience working for San Jose I thought would help the city council implement their visions, which I share."

Saadati said he hopes to help solve affordable housing problems and looks forward to working on developing a new downtown.

Cupertino Union School District's Barry Chang and Hugh Riddell were appointed to the public safety commission for their first full terms. Frank Jelinch was reappointed for his second term in parks and recreation, and L.T. Guttadauro was reappointed for his second term on the telecommunications commission. Rita Young, Hema Kundargi and Barbara Phelps were all reappointed to the fine arts commission.
