Council approves CCS development
At the Jan. 16 council meeting, the council approved the long-awaited Cupertino Community Services affordable housing development at Vista Drive and Stevens Creek Blvd. Council members spoke positively of the project, and expressed their hopes for more like it in the future.
Council approves $5,000 veteran donation
Council members also approved a request to donate $5,000 to the World War II veterans' memorial in Washington D.C. In addition, the council asked its staff to look into the possibility of building a local monument, or rededicating an existing flagpole to honor veterans of all wars.
City commission vacancies
The council also set a date to review applicants for openings on several city commissions. On Feb. 5, beginning at 5 p.m., the council will interview peopleapplying for positions on the audit committee, the Fine Arts Commission, and the library commissioner. Interested residents should retrieve an application form from the city clerk's office at 10300 Torre Ave. before the Jan. 30 deadline.
City is finacially healthy
The city received a clean bill of financial health from its new auditor. The good news continued, as council members heard that the city ended the fiscal year with a surplus of $1.7 million, instead of the expected $1.6 million deficit. The Capital Improvement Project Reserve also ended the year with an extra $3 million, bringing it to $6 million for the year and $21 million total. The extra money can be attributed to high sales tax revenues, city officials say.
Other Council Business
The city council appointed Carol Atwood as city treasurer and Lois Thornton as deputy treasurer; agreed to execute a cooperative agreement with the Santa Clara Valley Water District for the Calabazas Creek Bridge; decided to purchase radar speed trailer and laser detectors from the State of California for $25,000; endorsed the purchase and installation of LED traffic signals for $135,000 under the PG&E LED Traffic Signal Rebate Program; and authorized the execution of a contract with All City Management Services for crossing guards at eight Cupertino schools.
