Osian a champion at the Bianchini
Monta Vista freshman wins at Root Classic

Chris Osian was just a baby when Cupertino hosted its first Gary Bianchini Memorial wrestling tournament in 1987. Back then, the only sort of pins he knew anything about were diaper pins.
But 16 years later it's a different story. The Fremont senior's diaper days are long past, and earlier this month he was busy pinning an individual championship at 119 pounds at the 16th annual Bianchini Memorial.
Osian's performance helped Fremont to a team eighth in the rugged 26-team field, which included many of the state's outstanding mat teams.
State-ranked Vacaville, Turlock and Del Oro took the top three places in the team standings, and Los Gatos nailed fourth to figure as the top finisher from the Central Coast Section.
De La Salle was fifth overall, with Bellarmine sixth and CCS powerhouse North Monterey County seventh.
Fremont finished a solid eighth in the tourney with host Cupertino claiming 12th overall. Monta Vista tied for 19th in the standings.
Osian topped a pack of five Fremont placers with his championship at 119 pounds.
Bayardo Sanchez was third at 140, Joseph Seo was fourth at 125, Alvin Cacdac was sixth at 130 and Daniel Atondo was sixth at 160 to round out the list of Firebirds who placed in the tourney.
Three Cupertino wrestlers placed in the tournament which was hosted by the Pioneers. Ben Reynolds was third at 189 pounds, Andrew Reese was third at 171 and Mitch Conley was fourth at 112.
Monta Vista standout Paul Montanez claimed a fourth-place finish at 152 pounds at the Bianchini. Freshman Dan Montanez and senior Brandon Reinhardt were each consolation champions for the Mats.
Homestead's Clark Chen was fifth at 145, with teammate Eric Matsuoka sixth at 112.
A week later at the Overfelt Classic, Chen and Matsuoka both placed for the Mustangs to lead Homestead to a 17th-place finish in the team standings.
Chen beat a wrestler from Tokay High School 12-5 in his last match to clinch third place at 145 pounds at Overfelt. Matsuoka topped Willow Glen's Sam Olivas 9-2 in the fifth-place match at 112 pounds.
At the Jim Root Classic, held Jan. 19, Monta Vista's D. Montanez and Lynbrook's Gabe Tseng each won individual titles.
Tseng was a champion at 125 pounds and Jimmy Mar finished second at 103 to lead the Vikings to a ninth-place finish in the team charts at the Root.
D. Montanez was the individual champ at 140 pounds in the tourney. The freshman, who is now 18-3 for the year, did not give up a takedown in the entire tournament and won four straight matches to claim his title--winning 11-2, 6-0, on a first round fall and 3-0 in the finals.
P. Montanez, a solid 17-5 for the year, finished fifth at 152 pounds.
In other tournament action, Monta Vista freshmen David Clewett and Taylor Oberhelman each placed at the Los Gatos Frosh-Soph Invitational. Oberhelman finished first at 152 pounds and Clewett was second at 112. A week earlier, Oberhelman had finished fourth at 152 pounds in the Danny Ruppel Memorial at Cupertino.
In recent dual match action in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, Monta Vista dropped a 39-24 decision to Palo Alto despite getting wins from the Montanez brothers and Brandon Reinhardt.
D. Montanez blanked his Paly opponent 6-0 at 140 pounds and P. Montanez pulled out a tight 5-3 overtime win at 152.
Reinhardt pinned 24 seconds into the third round at 215 pounds for the Matadors. Vivek Shah (119) and Jake Zander (135) each picked up forfeit wins.
Monta Vista will be home this week to face Cupertino on Jan. 31, 6:30 p.m.
In other action, Fremont lost a 46-11 decision to unbeaten Los Gatos.
There were some close matches, but Fremont could nail just three wins against the Wildcats.
Osian capped the night with a lopsided 14-0 win at 121 pounds, and Josh DeSherlia rolled to a 20-6 victory at 147. Luke Tran was a 17-4 winner at 154 pounds for Fremont.
A week earlier, Fremont rolled to a 53-22 De Anza Division win over Lynbrook, winning in 10 of the 14 weight classes.
Osian pinned at 1:40 of the first round at 125 pounds and L. Tran won by fall with 57 seconds left in the third round at 145.
Art Ancheta roughed up his opponent for a first-round technical fall at 189, Joe Tran won 5-0 at 119, DeSherlia pulled out a tight 12-11 win at 152 and Daniel Nahum won 9-3 at 275.
For Lynbrook, Mar pinned in the second round at 103 pounds, Brian Lee pinned with 10 seconds left in the third round at 112 and Dan Morrill won by fall in 45 seconds at 215 pounds. Tseng cruised to a 12-1 major decision win at 130.
