Flea Market not in danger
I am responding to the article published in the Jan. 23 issue of the Cupertino Courier that discussed the popular, once-a-month De Anza Flea Market. This event raises thousands of dollars every year for our educational programs and services, and it has been a win-win situation for all concerned: our students, the vendors and the community members who enjoy buying items and unique treasures there.
I can assure your readers and our entire community that the De Anza Flea Market is not an endangered event. The Flea Market will continue to take place on the first Saturday of every month during the Measure E construction and renovation. Passed by our voters more than two years ago, the bond measure is providing De Anza with $130 million to improve the nearly 35-year-old infrastructure and construct several new buildings.
Whether renovation takes place on a small scale (such as upgrading a kitchen in a home) or at a large community college that serves 25,000 students a quarter, there will be some unavoidable inconveniences. We are making careful plans to keep inconveniences to a minimum.
We promise to keep the college and community informed when we temporarily relocate the Flea Market during construction. Community members are invited to share their concerns or make suggestions at the Flea Market Office located in the Hinson Campus Center. De Anza College is thankful for the community's continued support.
Martha J. Kanter
De Anza College President
