    Donovan, Zanke take top honors

This year's awards for sheriff's deputy and firefighter of the year, presented at the Jan. 26 State of the City address, both went to 24-year veterans.

The California Senate and local Chamber of Commerce officials honored Fire Captain Chris Donovan, who has worked out of the Cupertino Fire Station on Stevens Creek Boulevard since being promoted to Captain in July 1976. Donovan was recognized for mentoring co-workers, spearheading a drive for special training for fighting high-rise fires and serving on the Cupertino Station Design Committee. He began his firefighting career in 1968 with the Burbank Fire District, which later merged with the Central Fire District (now the Santa Clara County Fire Department).

Officials also recognized Sheriff's Deputy Fritz Zanker, a motorcycle officer, honoring his working outside normal hours on the job to help resolve traffic problems around Stevens Creek Elementary School. Zanker, who has worked out of the Westside Substation for the last three years, met with parents during and after school on his time off until the problem was fixed.

The state Senate commendations were delivered by a staffer from State Sen. Byron Sher's office.
