Mustangs need to win at St. Francis
Cifuentes stars in 'Tino soccer wins
By DICK SPARRER
The St. Francis Lancers are tough no matter where they play.
But when they run out onto their own floor in Mountain View... well, no one steps into the Lancers' house and has an easy time of it.
Homestead girls basketball coach Wade Nakamura certainly knows that. But he also knows that his Mustangs need a win over the Lancers to move into a tie for first place in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And that means, if Homestead has come out of the Lancers' house with a victory, so be it.
That's just what the Mustangs will be trying to do this Thursday. They need to upset the first-place Lancers to create a first-place tie in the De Anza Division.
St. Francis enters play this week with a 9-0 record and sitting alone atop the division standings. Homestead started the week 7-1, but figured to pick up a win over last-place Los Gatos on Feb. 6, 7 p.m., at home.
That means that first place will be on the line when the Mustangs and Lancers collied at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 8.
The Mustangs, whose only league loss was at the hands of the Lancers, stayed close in the race with a win over Gunn in their only game last week.
Senior superstar Julia Randall poured in 25 points, including a three-pointer, to lead the Mustangs to a 57-40 win over the Titans.
Tanya Green, another senior sensation for Homestead, supported with 17 points in the win. Sabrina Gauthier chipped in with eight points, Charlene Jarrett hit four, Mandy Wald had two and Janelle Kitasoe hit one. Gauthier popped a three-pointer in the win.
The Mustangs, 15-5 for the year, were down 14-13 after a period, but moved in front 23-21 by intermission. Homestead dominated Gunn 20-10 in the third quarter and 14-9 in the fourth to roll to the 17-point victory.
In El Camino Division play, Lori Kozen poured in 20 points and Margaret Donoghue pitched in 18 to lead Cupertino to a 56-41 win over Monta Vista. Allison Mine joined the two in double digits with 10 points and Kristina Kozen added eight.
Katherine Fustar was the scoring leader for the Matadors in the loss with 11 points, including a three-pointer. Jen Kawashima had a pair of threes among her nine points and Deanna Sainten added nine points. Diana Chien hit four points, Vicki Wang and Emily Maples three each and Lauren Yee two.
Earlier in the week, Cupertino lost 54-38 to first-place Los Altos and Monta Vista lost 56-44 to second-place Wilcox.
Mine had four threes on the way to a 17-point night for the Pioneers against the Eagles. Donoghue added eight points, Cynthia Cardona seven, Jaffra Millner five and Margaret Washington one.
Wang led the scoring for Monta Vista against the Chargers with 10 points. Chien and Sainten hit eight apiece, Yee five, Fustar and Ting Feng four each, Kawashima three and Maples two.
Soccer
The Homestead boys soccer team upped its record to 4-2-4 in the De Anza Division with a tight 2-1 win over Saratoga last week.
Samuel Krow-Local knocked in a first-half goal off an assist from Brian Oliveira, and Justin Bocchini came through with the game winning goal when he scored off a Brian Maihack assist.
The Homestead girls came through with a win and a tie, but also lost a tough decision in De Anza Division play. The Mustangs are 6-4-2 in the division and 9-5-4 overall.
Laura Phan scored a first-half goal, and that stood up for a 1-0 Homestead win over Los Altos to open the week.
After a tough 1-0 loss to unbeaten Palo Alto, Homestead fought back for a 1-1 tie against Saratoga. Diana Blasquez scored a first-half goal off a Dana Muhlrelder assist to give the Mustangs the lead, but the Falcons tied the game in the second half.
Monta Vista slipped to 4-6-2 in the De Anza Division with three tough losses last week. The Matadors lost twice to first-place Paly, falling 1-0 to open the week and 3-0 to finish the week. In between, the Mats lost 2-1 to second-place St. Francis.
