Mats, Pioneers fall
The Monta Vista and Cupertino wrestling teams each lost in dual match action in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL last week.
The Matadors lost twice, falling 47-11 to Palo Alto and 60-9 to Fremont, and Cupertino dropped its only match, falling 50-10 to powerful Los Gatos.
The Pioneers and Wildcats actually went into the Wednesday night match at Cupertino sharing first place in the division with matching 4-0 records. But after losing the first match, Gatos came back with 12 straight wins to claim the lopsided victory.
The loss left the Pioneers 4-1 in the division with just one match remaining. Cupertino will visit Fremont on Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m., to close out the dual match season.
All of the teams in the SCVAL will converge on the Wilcox mats on Feb. 10 for the league finals. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for the evening. Junior varsity league finals will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilcox.
Rory Conley got the Pioneers off to a strong start against Los Gatos with a quick pin in 45 seconds at 105 pounds. But the Cats took off on a string of a dozen victories to take over the match.
Sophomore Ben Reynolds capped the night with a 16-4 win at 277 pounds for Cupertino, but the damage had already been done by the Wildcats.
Only Derek Shah and Daniel Latona could come up with wins for Monta Vista against Fremont the same night.
Shah nailed a 10-3 win at 114 pounds, but the Firebirds went on to win six straight matches before Latona won by fall with 24 secons left in the second round at 173 pounds.
Fremont ended up winning 60-9 to push its league record to 3-2.
Earlier in the week, Monta Vista won three bouts in a 47-11 loss to Palo Alto.
David Hournaresh, Shah and Paul Montanez were individual winners for the Mats against the Vikings.
Hournaresh pulled out a 5-4 win at 105 pounds and Shah won 6-1 at 114. Montanez nailed a 16-0 victory at 142 pounds.
