Library tax dollars deserve better use
Before you vote on Measure A to fund the Cupertino library, consider the following:
* The proposed cost of $22 million represents $523 from each of Cupertino's 42,000 residents.
* Cupertino now has more than 20 libraries within its city limits. These libraries are operated by our three school districts, including DeAnza College. They have been paid for and maintained with tax dollars. Instead of running out and spending $22 million, lets work with the school libraries on extending their operating hours. Volunteers could play an important role in this project.
* The $22 million proposed cost doesn't include the cost of the property that we have already paid for and will now lose as open space. It also doesn't include the increased cost of maintenance and increased county staffing that we in Cupertino will have to pay.
* We also will be voting on Proposition 14 , an initiative for $350 million in state bonds for capital improvements for libraries.
Why duplicate services that already exist but are not being offered where they are needed? The city and schools need to work together in being better stewards of our tax dollars.
Vote No on measure A.
