Big wins for Homestead teams
Girls top Lancers, boys beat Falcons
By DICK SPARRER
Every win is sweet for a high school basketball team.
But the Homestead girls and boys basketball teams each posted victories last week that were just a bit sweeter than the rest.
The Homestead girls pulled out a thrilling 33-30 victory over first-place St. Francis last week to create a tie atop the pack in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And the Homestead boys upset Saratoga 64-59 to deal the Falcons a severe blow in their quest for a championship in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
Both Homestead victories avenged losses to the same clubs earlier in the league season.
Mustangs top Lancers
Homestead had lost to St. Francis on the first trip through the De Anza Division schedule, and a second loss last week would have all but dashed any hopes the Mustangs might have had of winning a league championship.
But a loss just wasn't in the cards for the Mustangs.
Senior guard Vickie Chiang buried 13 points to lead Homestead to the key win over the Lancers. Marie Levey, Tanya Green and Chris Strombel chipped in with five points each.
The Mustangs trailed 11-8 after a period but grabbed a 17-16 lead by intermission, then they fought back from a 22-21 deficit after three periods to win it in the fourth.
Homestead is now 8-1 in the division and 16-6 for the year. The Lancers slipped to 7-1 in division play and to 18-4 for the season.
The Mustangs had opened the week with a thrilling 51-45 double-overtime win over Gunn. The score bounced back and forth with Gunn leading 12-8 at the first buzzer, Homestead on top 20-17 at the half, and the Mustangs up just 30-28 after three quarters. Gunn tied it in regulation and the clubs matched buckets in a 2-2 overtime before the Mustangs topped the Titans 8-2 in the second OT.
Julia Randall poured in 18 points, including eight free throws, to lead all Homestead scorers in the win. Chiang joined her in double digits with 12 points.
Levey supported with eight points in the win and Green and Strombel added six points apiece.
Homestead tops 'Toga
The Homestead boys came out of nowhere to upset Saratoga 64-59 last week.
The Falcons were just a game behind Lynbrook in the race for first place in the El Camino Division, and the Mustangs were reeling from a 44-25 loss to the Vikings.
But sophomore guard Brad Sasaki came through with 17 points and senior forward Trenton Hill tossed in 13 more to lead the Mustangs to the upset win over the Falcons.
Robbie Hoffman joined the two in twin figures with 10 points. Hoffman popped a pair of three-pointers and Hill hit one.
Taylor Carpenter canned nine points, Ramont Thomas hit eight, Garren Strong had five and John McLaughlin added two to round out the scoring for the Mustangs.
Homestead, just 3-6 in the division and 6-17 for the year, had lost to Lynbrook to open the week.
Vikings win two
Lynbrook continues to roll through the pack in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL. The Vikings beat Homestead 44-25 and Monta Vista 48-35 last week to improve to 9-0 in the division and to 17-6 for the year.

Justin Fujihara and Ray Supan each finished with nine points and each hit a three, and B.K. Robertson had eight points. Jeff Chan also popped a three and Scott Stevens had two points.
Sasaki topped the Mustangs with nine points, including a three. Carpenter, McLaughlin, Tom Bishop and Hafez Shahabi added four each.

Chris Chalfant was the top scorer for the Matadors with 11 points. Maz Astar finished with eight points, including a couple of threes, Eric Giambattista hit seven, Ajay Nagdev five and Daryl Griffin and Artist Battle two each. Nagdev also hit a three.
Lynbrook puts its perfect league record on the line at Fremont on Feb. 10, 7 p.m., before hosting Saratoga on Feb. 16 in a big 7 p.m. game.
Pioneers lose
Brandon Clark canned 17 points, but the Cupertino boys basketball team dropped a 37-32 El Camino decision to Mountain View last week. Clark had a three among six field goals and he added four free throws.

Stevens and McPherson hit 12 apiece in the loss to the Chargers, and they came back with nine each in the loss to Milpitas.
Matadors winless
The Monta Vista girls basketball team remained winless in the De Anza Division after a 68-51 loss to Gunn last week.
