The Cupertino City Council took time to express its thanks to some of the people involved in De Anza Community College bombing scare at its regular meeting Feb. 5. Council members offered their thanks to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department for their assistance in evacuating the De Anza College Campus during the bomb scare there on Jan. 30, and the two Long Drugstore employees who alerted the San Jose Police Department to the alleged plot.

In a gesture of the city's appreciation, Mayor Sandra James issued a proclamation praising the efforts of the Sheriff's Office and the two Longs employees, Kelly Bennett and Michelle Houde.

Sheriff Laurie Smith spoke to the council and give her analysis of the events surrounding De Anza bomb scare. Smith reported the evidence recovered from DeGuzman's home gave a plan of attack at the college, and the Sheriff's Office decided with the school to evacuate the campus. She said the evacuation went smoothly, and thanked the students, faculty and staff of De Anza for handling the events in an orderly fashion.

James lauded the events as evidence that the city's contract with the Sheriff's Office "is a system that worked,' describing the Sheriff's deputies as "absolutely outstanding." Vice-mayor Richard Lowenthal thanked the sheriff for providing the city with the confidence that "we have the best people out there ... Your department kept this down to one crisis."

Smith thanked Cupertino in return, expressing her appreciation for the city's general cooperative relationship with the department. "You're a great community," she said, "and we're glad to be a part of it."
