The Cupertino CourierIt's party timeBy Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel Blame it on El Niño! Regnart Road has been washed out by Regnart Creek. What a roundabout way to get about these days. What will we have to complain about when it comes summertime?. . . Tom Legan was a winner at his own birthday party at Lazerquest, a laser shoot-em-up game. Tom had 1000 points, and his closest competitor had 500 points. Could it be his training at West Point Academy or just plain luck? It's not his age--he's old! His wife, Nicol, couldn't aim worth a darn. Allan and Betty Bidwell came all the way from Palm Springs; of course, they were also here to help the 49ers. Didn't do any good, though. . . . Cupertino Federated Women's Club's annual essay competition for sixth-graders in the Cupertino School District was held recently. There were 59 entries from six schools. Rex Petrill from Montclair School was the first-place winner. Honorable-mention awards went to Jennifer Lin from Lincoln School and Raahul Srinivasan from West Valley School. Agnes Locher always does a great job as chair. Kudos to another service club taking time to honor our esteemed students. . . . The locally owned, regionally supported Santa Barbara Grill celebrated the redecoration of the bar area. (Anything for a party!) Some supporters seen guzzling or yakking with the other party animals were Penny and Dennis Whittwaker, Ruth and Len Donk, Leon and Cindy Davis, David Voss and many others often mentioned in our column . . . . Look out, Leigh Weimers! We hear we're picking up more gossip groupies from cities throughout the county. Included are Dave Heagerty, who takes the paper home to his wife, Evelyn, in the Rose Garden, Bob and Lynn Davidson of Sunnyvale and Dick Henning of Los Altos. Dorothy and Darryl Stow are so busy volunteering in Cupertino that they've not even put 2,000 miles on their new SUV (sports utility vehicle) bought in October. The dealership keeps calling them to come in for their 3,000-mile checkup!. . . . Friends and co-workers of John Statton threw the new City Councilmember a surprise farewell party at El Torito's in Vallco as he leaves his executive director post at the Chamber of Commerce. What a crowd! Paul and Barbara Weiss, Erika and Hank Kirtland, Chamber president Rich Abdalah, Jack Hubby, Don Burnett and Mark Burns, to name just a few in the throng. We'll miss you, John . . . Sunnyvale Women's Golf Club has a big group of golfers and even some gossip groupies from Cupertino. They play together and party together (especially during the holidays). Some of them at this year's festivities were past captains Sylvia Dunn and Eileen Pimlott, Sachiko Coleman, Pat Humphrey, Barbara Humphry, Maria Kuschill, Peggy Masini and Pat Tapley. What do you do with El Niño? Stay home and clean house. Bring on the sunshine and a dry golf course. . . . One of our all-time senior citizens has left Cupertino. Gen Ziegler has moved to Shingle Springs to live with her nephew, George. Gen was a devoted Historical Society groupie, and she also was a gleaner (picked up food from Nob Hill) for Cupertino Community Services. We're all going to miss the support you have given us for millions of years. Come back and visit soon. . . . Keep in touch.
