    Alzheimer's talk at Senior Center

    The nonprofit Alzheimer's Association is hosting a free presentation by its CEO, William Fisher, at the Cupertino Senior Center Feb. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. Fisher will discuss current developments and what can be expected for the future of a disease that affects 70,000 people in the Bay Area. Fisher will also discuss how family and friends can help and what community resources are available. There is no pre-registration required and questions can be answered by calling 800.660.1993.

    Rotary sponsors Feb. 27 contest

    The Cupertino Rotary is sponsoring a speech contest Feb. 27 at the Quinlan Center from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for the Cupertino area, including Cupertino, Lynbrook and Monta Vista High schools. The theme is "Mankind is Our Business," and it's open to students in ninth through twelfth grades. Cash prizes will be awarded. For more information contact George Tyson at 650.969.4478.

    VTA holds Highway 85 noise reduction

    A meeting to discuss noise reduction of Highway 85 is scheduled for Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Civic Theater. The Valley Transportation Authority will make a presentation focusing on project funding, asphalt/rubberized asphalt, micro-grinding treatments and the Caltrans perspective. It will also provide information of its current status and timelines for what will be occurring up to the project's completion date. Residents and city officials from the affected communities are encouraged to attend to lend support. For further information call Ardith West at 408.872.3141.

    St. Joseph starts tradition

    The first annual crab feed hosted by St. Joseph of Cupertino will be held March 1 in the parishhall, located at 10120 N. De Anza Blvd. The all-you-can-eat event begins at 6 p.m., with dinner being served at 7 p.m. Tickets purchased before Feb. 20 will be $25 each. Any available tickets after that date will be $30. Proceeds from the crab feed will go toward school programs. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the school office at 408.252.6441.

    De Anza names new VP

    Marly Bergerud was named the new vice president of workforce and economic development at De Anza College. Bergerud was a dean and senior administrator at the South Orange County Community College District for 19 years.

    "We are delighted to welcome Marly as our new vice president," said Martha Kanter, president of De Anza College. "Anticipating the knowledge, skills and strategies students will need to succeed in our expanding global workforce is central to the expertise Ms. Bergerud brings to our campus."
