    Beloved teacher, 73, dies

One of Cupertino's most beloved teachers died Feb. 14 after a three-year battle with cancer. She was 73 years old.

Katy Burt taught in the Cupertino Union School District for more than 20 years. During her long tenure, Katy held positions at Murdock, Jollyman, Lincoln and Eisenhower schools. She was a leading innovator in the Cupertino District, hosting teacher workshops, helping to develop the district's curriculum and serving as the public relations chairwoman for the teachers association. In 1980, she was named the Santa Clara County Teacher of the Year.

Born on April 5, 1925, in Fort Sill, Okla., Katy was a self-described "army brat." Along with their parents, Katy and her two brothers lived in a variety of locales, from the Philippines to Texas.

In the mid 1940s, Katy attended the new University of California at Santa Barbara, where she met her husband, Tom, in a golf class. The two married in September 1947. They had five children.

Katy was active in politics; she worked on John Kennedy's campaign and was later selected as a delegate for Robert Kennedy to the 1968 Democratic Convention. She remained active in politics for most of her life and sat on the county and state Democratic central committees. "So many legislators haven't been inside a school since they were in school," she said in a 1980 interview in the Valley Journal. "We need to bring that experience to them."

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Eisenhower School at 5:30 p.m.
