Annexation of Ranch Rinconada will soon be completed.
On March 1, the City Council is holding a public hearing to determine if the council will take the final step in ordering annexation of the Rancho area.
City Clerk Kim Smith will accept written protests to the annexation until the end of the hearing. As of Feb. 19, Smith had only received one written protest.
If less than 25 percent of the approximately 2,200 registered Rancho voters submit a written protest, the city will proceed by ordering the annexation of Rancho Rinconada.
If Smith receives protests from 25 to 50 percent of registered Rancho voters or property owners, the city will hold a special annexation election.
If the city receives protests from more than 50 percent of the voters, the annexation proceedings will be terminated.
"We're not expecting a whole lot of protest," said Colin Jung, associate planner. "We've already tested the waters several times. It's pretty clear that the majority of people in the area would like to become a part of Cupertino."
Annexation will not become final until the county issues a certification of completion. The city believes the annexation date will be around March 15, Jung said.
