Red Cross offers free CPR training Saturday at Vallco

The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering free CPR training to families and individuals this Saturday at Vallco Fashion Park.

    Participants must call (888) 686-3600 to pre-register for the event. Training times are 7:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Donations from PG&E, LifeScan, Seagate Technology, Metro Newspapers, KNTV-11, Vallco Fashion Park and The Party Company are allowing the Red Cross to offer the free training for more than 1,000 Santa Clara Valley residents.

In honor national Red Cross Month in March, the organization is raising funds and conducting family safety activities like the CPR training, as well as family disaster preparedness training.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Santa Clara County, according to Red Cross officials.

"More than 75 percent of all cardiac arrests occur at home, often with family and friends looking on, often not knowing what to do," said Mark Johnson, a member of the Health and Safety department at the Santa Clara Valley Chapter.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, the Red Cross is offering a "Safe Families Workshop" to families who want to learn how to protect themselves in a disaster. Call (408) 577-2023 to pre-register.
