Wey, Wang lead judo club to title
By KENRICK KIN
Winston Wey and Amanda Wang each won top awards in leading the Cupertino Judo Club to the team championship at the 54th annual San Jose Buddhist Judo Club and 10th "Sensei Memorial" Invitational Judo Tournament.
Wey, 12, was selected the Outstanding Junior Male Competitor and Wang, 14, was picked the Outstanding Intermediate Female Competitor at the event held Feb. 10. The two each finished first in their age divisions.
"I just tried my hardest and executed the techniques I've learned throughout the years," said Wey. "It was a great experience."
"Everyone fought hard," said coach Mike Wiley, who led Cupertino to its seventh team title in 10 years. "We practiced good technique and good sportsmanship that will benefit the students in the long run."
There were over 550 athletes in the daylong tournament which is said to be the biggest invitational in Northern California. Cupertino sent a team of 48 students to the tourney, and the locals won 34 medals in running up 99 team points to take the title. Amador Judo Club was second with 93 points.
Athletes competed in different divisions in the tournament based on rank, age and weight.
The Cupertino Judo Club, founded in 1964 by Jim Baker, holds practices at the Monta Vista Recreation Center, where students practice Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m. The club is cosponsored by the city of Cupertino.
