De Anza student named to California academic team
De Anza College student Colin Underwood was recently named to the 2000 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team.
Underwood, who will transfer to CSU-Hayward in the fall as a computer/multimedia major, was nominated for the team because he is exceptionally active on campus.
In addition to owning his own web design and Internet consulting firm, Underwood maintains the De Anza College webpage for the school's Marketing/Communications Office. He designs and maintains the Biological and Health Sciences Division website, and is helping to develop the school's Environmental Sciences Building. Underwood also is working with the college president, Martha Kanter, to increase student volunteerism in the community
Only two students from each community college in the nation are nominated for the All-America Academic Team. Nominees are ranked according to grade point average, extracurricular activities and volunteer work.
The highest-ranked 60 students in the nation are named to the All-America Team. The next 40 to 50 highest-ranking students are named to that state's team and placed in the first or second state team according to rank. Based on Underwood's team placement, he could receive either a full scholarship of $5,000 a year to attend a CSU campus, or, if placed on the second team, he would receive $1,800.

Rutherford was one of 19 Bay Area students selected for the honor, based on academics, involvement in the African American community, references and an essay.
FUHSD High Schools form Mod Squads
Mod Squads have been formed at each high school in the Fremont Union High School District to help with the district's facilities modernization program. Teams of, at least, two teachers, one classified staff member and one administrator comprise the Mod Squads. The squad serves as "moving coordinators" and will help each school's faculty and staff understand facility changes at their sites. The goal of the Mod Squad is to help staff prepare for the move.
