    Kennedy wins title

A 2-1 victory over Blach of Los Altos helped the Kennedy Middle School seventh- grade girls soccer team wrap up a championship and an undefeated season this winter.

Goals by forwards Krista Fazekas and Kendall Bruce sparked Kennedy to the title-clinching win over Blach. Goalkeeper Jennine Mazzana led a solid defensive effort for the winners.

Kennedy opened the season with a 7-0 win over Egan of Los Altos. The Cougars backed that up with wins over Miller (4-1), Sunnyvale (2-0), Hyde (6-0) and Columbia of Sunnyvale (8-0).

Their closest game of the year came in a 3-2 regular-season win over Blach when it took a crucial save by defender Katie Sang to clinch the victory. Blach's shot soared past the goalie, but Sang's header saved the potential game-tying goal.

Kennedy whipped Cupertino 6-0 and blanked Crittenden of Mountain View 8-0 to move into the league semifinals. The Cougars crushed Cupertino 6-0 again, then beat Blach 2-1 to clinch the title.

Members of the championship team included Bruce, Jacki Colloton, Danni Contro, Katie Cummings, Sarah DeWath, Kazekas, Nicole Greenwood, Jessie Hogin, Hillary Hughmanick, Mazzana, Monique Nunez, Natalie O'Farriell, Kylie Ratkovich, Autoosa Salari, Sahar Salek, Sang, Morgan Senzer and Nicole Staneck. The team was coached by Kennedy teachers Andie Kalkwarf and Mike Cellini.
