The Cupertino CourierNews BriefsCUSD parents ask board to provide immersion program A group of parents and educators will ask the Cupertino Union School District at the March 24 board meeting to provide a voluntary Mandarin-English bilingual classroom. Board members will not vote to implement the program at the meeting, only listen to parents' concerns about the issue. The board is currently collecting information on the immersion program that would teach both English and Mandarin to students at the kindergarten level beginning in the fall. The board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the CUSD administration building at 10301 Vista Drive. Historical society sets up new exhibit The Cupertino Historical Society is closing down the Cupertino Historical Museum for a few weeks to set up this year's exhibit, "From the Ground Up--How Business Grew in Cupertino." The museum closed its doors March 17 and will reopen April 25. The new exhibit will take a look at how business has grown in Cupertino, from orchards and farms to large international corporations. The museum is located at the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road. Its normal hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. The society's satellite museum in the Vallco Fashion Park mall is open to the public noon to 3 p.m., Tuesdays and Saturdays. "Farm and Family: Life in Early Cupertino, 1920s" is currently showing there. Audubon Society hosts education day The Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring its seventh annual Audubon Education Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this Saturday, March 21, at McClellan Ranch Park. This year the society is featuring programs about California's wildlife and habitats. There will be bird and nature walks, live animals, exhibits, demonstrations, a scavenger hunt and a poster contest. A free shuttle service will run from Monta Vista High School, just a quarter-mile up the road from the park. There will be no parking available at the site. CREST seeks nominees Nominations for the CREST award, which recognizes Cupertino's outstanding volunteers, close this Friday. CREST stands for Cupertino Recognizes Extra Steps Taken. Up to 10 volunteers who have made significant contributions to the Cupertino community during the past year will be honored. A committee made up of representatives from each of the city's advisory commissions will review the nominations and select the recipients for this year's CREST Award. A special ceremony to honor this year's recipients will be held on May 14, at the Quinlan Community Center. Nomination forms are available at City Hall, 10300 Torre Ave.; the Cupertino Library, 10400 Torre Ave.; Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N.
