Homestead multicultural club encourages unity
By Melissa Matchak
Homestead High School's first multicultural club, All Shades of Color, will host its second annual International Night on March 31, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the high school. All Shades of Color works with different community organizations to raise cultural awareness and strives to promote racial unity at the high school and in the community.
Members of the club will prepare a multicultural dinner, with food from local restaurants, including Indian cuisine and sushi. The event will include dance presentations by Culture Shock, the Chinese Performing Artists of America, ballroom dance teams and others, and a cultural fashion show. A raffle will be held, with a membership to 24 Hour Fitness gym as the largest prize.
All proceeds from the event will help fund a trip to Camp Anytown, a four-day retreat that teaches students how to build an inclusive community. The goal of the program is to draw students with leadership potential into mainstream society, empowering the participants to break down racism, religious and ethnic discrimination, thereby preventing and reducing the incidence of youth violence.
More than 2,500 people attended last year's International Night, including the mayor. This year, radio station Wild 94.9 FM and Mayor Jack Walker will attend the event. Tickets for the event are $5, which includes dinner, entertainment and one raffle ticket. For more information, call 408.536.0832.
