    Hortensia Alverado, FUHSD Employee-of -the-Year

    Alvarado honored for her efforts

    By Michelle Alaimo

The friendly voice behind all incoming calls to Fremont Union High School recently won an award for her efforts.

FUHSD classified employees selected Senior Clerical Assistant Hortensia Alvarado as Employee-of-the-year. Officials publicly recognized Alvarado at Fremont Union High School District's board meeting on Feb. 15.

"She was selected because she works with the staff on a daily basis and is really helpful to everyone," FHS principal Pete Tuana said.

Alvarado not only answers all incoming calls on seven lines, but also handles deliveries to the school, orders supplies and juggles odd jobs, such as labeling mailboxes.

Alvarado also puts her bilingual skills to use by interpreting for some of the parents who call the school.

"I really enjoy my job because I get to interact with students, teachers, and parents," Alvarado said.

Working in schools for most of her career, Alvarado has a lot of experience to share with others. Maria Gomez, a senior clerical assistant who works with Alvarado in the main office, said Alvarado is pleasant to everyone. It's hard to describe just how hard Alvarado works until she is seen in action, Gomez said.

Alvarado started working in the district 10 years ago, as a clerk typist at Homestead High School before transferring to FHS in 1992. Prior to working for FUHSD, she worked at several other local schools, including San Jose City College.

In her spare time, Alvarado spends time with her two grown sons, reads autobiographies and traces her family history.
