'Salute to Staff' will honor employees, raise funds

The Cupertino Quota Club is calling on all employers to enter their support staff employees in an "Employee of the Year" contest, which will help raise money for local charities.

The deadline for contest applications is April 9. Applications are available from the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce, the Cupertino National Bank and from Financial Title Company.

The award will be presented at a luncheon called "Salute to Staff; Honoring America's Work Force," at 11:50 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, at the Quinlan Community Center. Tickets are $18.50 per person, and are available at the same locations. The last chance to purchase tickets is April 16; seating is limited to 300 people.

Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit charities that help speech- and hearing-impaired people, as well as other local charities, through the Quota Club's grant recipient process.

Some recent grant recipients include Cupertino Community Services, the Cupertino History Museum, the Cupertino Union School District, the Monta Vista High School Hearing Impaired Program and the California School for the Deaf.

For more information about the contest or the luncheon, call Nicôl Lea at (408) 366-0688, ext. 133, or Barbara Rogers at 252-8568.

Adult Ed offers free citizenship classes

The Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult Education Department is now taking sign-ups for two free citizenship classes that start April 5, as well as a one-day class to prepare for citizenship interviews.

The ESL (English as a Second Language) Citizenship Preparation Class is for legal residents with five years residence status who need some ESL instruction in reading, writing and speaking to pass the citizenship test. Class participants should be at an intermediate level of English.

Classes are from 6:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, April 5 through June 2, at Fremont High School.

The Citizenship Preparation Class is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. It meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the same nights as the ESL class, also at Fremont.

A one-day class is available from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, to help people prepare for the citizenship interview. The class will take place at the Adult Education Center, 589 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale. Class size is limited.

    For information, call (408) 522-2735.
