    Leaders celebrate Lunar New Year

The movers and shakers of Cupertino were out in force last week at the first annual Lunar New Year Celebration presented by the Chamber of Commerce's Asian American Business Council.

The entire City Council and Sheriff Laurie Smith were among the approximately 200 people in attendance at the March 15 luncheon at the Joy Luck Place to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.

The event was also used to formally introduce the AABC's two new co-chairs--Michael Chang and Hsing Kung--and to honor Richard Abdalah, the founding chair, with a special award. The council was formed last June due to Abdalah's vision to increase Asian American business participation in the Chamber.

Don Allen, Cupertino's 1998 Citizen of the Year, presented the keynote address.

Turnout for the event was higher than anticipated. The Chamber had expected 150 people, said Linda Asbury, Chamber executive director.

The next council meeting is Wednesday, April 14. For more information, call 252-7054 ext. 11.
