Late run sparks 'Tino winMatadors drop Titans to move into first placeBy Dick Sparrer Brian Filizetti needed a run. The Cupertino pitcher had tossed a seven-hitter and held Palo Alto to just a pair of runs, but the Pioneers needed a run in the home half of the seventh to break the tie and get Filizetti the victory. The Pioneers got just what they needed. Cupertino scored in the seventh to pull out a thrilling 3-2 win over the Vikings. The win helped the Pioneers improve to 2-3 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 6-4 for the year. Chris McManus and Matt Mueller slapped two hits apiece and Daniel Barzci ripped a double to spark the seven-hit attack for Cupertino. The Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second, but Paly fought back with single runs in the third and the fifth to tie it, 2-2. But 'Tino snapped the tie with the run in the seventh to give Filizetti the mound win. He pushed his pitching record to 3-0 with the victory. Mustangs lose three It was a long week for Homestead. The Mustangs dropped a 6-2 nonleague decision to Leigh, then lost twice in league play, falling 11-4 to Los Gatos and 4-0 to Milpitas. The Mustangs are now 1-4 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL, and 2-5-1 for the year. Aaron Hall slapped a double, but that was just one of the two hits the Mustangs could manage in the loss to the Longhorns. Homestead jumped in front 1-0 in the first inning, but Leigh came back with three in the third and two in the fifth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The Mustangs scored again in the sixth, but Leigh matched the run in the bottom of the frame and went on to clinch the 6-1 win. Homestead pounded out 11 hits against Los Gatos later in the week, but the Mustangs could only drive across four runs in the league loss to the Wildcats. Curtis Sanders doubled and singled twice to knock in two runs for the Mustangs, and Steven Milliken singled and doubled to knock in a pair. Andy Myers singled and tripled in the loss, and Hall had two hits. Gatos went up 3-0 in the first, but the Mustangs fought back in the home half of the frame to cut the lead to 3-2. The Cats added two in the second to go up 5-2, then broke the game open with four in the fourth. Tony Plant doubled and Hall had two hits, but the Mustangs were blanked 4-0 by Milpitas later in the week. Matadors win Monta Vista moved into sole ownership of first place in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL with a tight 2-0 win over Gunn last week. The clubs went into their Tuesday game separated by just a half game in the standings and a game in the loss column, but Monta Vista turned that around with the victory. The win left the Matadors 4-1 in division play, and Gunn slipped to 3-1. The clubs are now even in the all-important loss column, and now it's Monta Vista up by a half game in the division standings. Ben Lewis had a big day for the Matadors. Not only did the left-hander pick up the mound win for the Mats, but he also doubled and tripled to lead a nine-hit attack. Lewis ran his season mound record to 3-0 with the win as Monta Vista blanked Gunn on just four hits. Ryan Realini singled and doubled for Monta Vista in the win, and Ryan Oliver and Ryan Mitchell added two hits apiece. The Matadors and Titans were locked in a scoreless tie for five innings before the Mats broke things up with two runs in the sixth. Monta Vista is now 4-4 for the year. Young Mats win, too The Monta Vista junior varsity, meanwhile, breezed to four straight wins, beating Lynbrook 5-4, Gunn 13-6, Homestead 15-1 and Fremont 8-4. Casy Wilms doubled twice to knock in four runs, and Ryan Latshaw ripped three hits to lead the Matadors to the win over Fremont. Daniel Lawver had two hits for Monta Vista. John Lozano doubled twice and singled to drive in three runs in a lopsided win over Homestead. Ryan Watkins, Latshaw, Steven Chung and Andrew Ishak had two hits each for the winners. Latshaw and Bob Dexter cracked three hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack in the win over Gunn. Lozano singled and doubled in the win, and Eric Stocklmeir and Lawver each cracked two-baggers. Lozano had three hits and Wilms singled and doubled to lead Monta Vista to the win over Lynbrook. Justin Douglas also doubled for the Mats. Monta Vista's freshman team lost a pair of games, falling 9-3 to Wilcox after dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker to Mitty. Bryan Tompkins and Ziv Tepman had two hits apiece, and Douglas doubled in the loss to the Monarchs. Monta Vista rallied for six runs in the seventh inning, but came up a run short. Artist Battle, Lawver and Brad Dexter each doubled in the loss to Wilcox.
