Ready for the CEEF gala?

By Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel

What would you do if you were a busy volunteer and had nothing to do on a Tuesday? Why, you would fly to L.A. for a free breakfast at Neiman Marcus, of course. Kathee Kraker flew to have breakfast with former Cupertinian Susan Bogdanovich and her daughter, Christine Bagges, a Monta Vista grad. After breakfast Kathee and Susan went dress shopping for the upcoming Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF) gala being held on May 16 at Silicon Graphics in Mountain View. For more information, contact the CEEF office at 446-CEEF. Yes, Susan and her husband, Nick, will be there, so you all can catch up on the goings on of the Bogdanoviches. . . .

Barry and Mari Tank, along with Dino and Pat Coppe, are off to Las Vegas to celebrate Barry's retirement from Willis-Carroon. Golf, golf and more golf, and, maybe some gambling, too? Hey, Barry, you're too young to retire. Remember, Mari married you for better or worse, but not for lunch. Congratulations, and don't spend too much time on the golf course. . . . "Totally cool," says Heidi Hagenlocher about Van Adams' letter to the neighbors of Kennedy Middle School. All the portables in the parking lot are to handle the students as the school district completes the facility modernization. The estimated completion is August 1999. . . .

Speaking of Heidi Hagenlocher, she and her husband, Willi, are back from Switzerland and Germany to celebrate the 95th birthdays of Heidi's dad and Willi's mom. Ninety-five years is really a long time. . . . A fundraising dinner to support Measure H--Yes for Kids was held recently at Hong Fu Restaurant. Some of the students participating were Angela Kung, Ellen Byron, Larry Kao, Aileen Chang, Kathleen Mok, Meghen Juhl and Jason Tong. Supporters and worker bees include Joe Hamilton, FUHSD superintendent, Dave Pitman, Kevin O'Reilly and Randy Okamura. . . .

A Blast of a Mixer was held at the Senior Center--sponsored by the one and only Greg Jow of AIG. Some on the party scene were Kim Smith, our city clerk; Rich Abdalah, Mr. Chamber Prez; Bill Lester; Charles Newman; Joe (crew cut) Brown; Jose Salcido, candidate for sheriff,; Mary Ellen Chell; and Gregg Jackson, who sacrificed his jacket for Bob Koppel. Those were just a few of the many active community partygoers. Nice event, Greg. . . .

Changing of the guard. Linda Asbury joins us this week as the Chamber of Commerce's new executive director. She comes from the San Jose/Los Gatos Chamber and is very excited to become a part of our wonderful community. We're very excited to have her, too! We will miss John Statton, who will be leaving, but we will see him on the first and third Monday evenings at our City Council meetings as one of our newest councilmembers. . . . Quota Club of Cupertino, one of our great local service clubs, is having a special drawing of a hog (Harley-Davidson motorcycle) to support local charities, especially those benefiting the deaf and hard of hearing. The drawing will be April 9, at a special luncheon at the Quinlan Center. If you want to participate contact Jane Asher, 720-8080 days, or Debbie Dougherty, 973-0700 days. Special drawing tickets are $10 a piece, and only 5,000 will be sold. . . . .

We send our condolences to Bill and Nancy Steffen who lost their daughter Amy in a car accident on Monday. She was 30. Amy grew up in Cupertino and graduated from Cupertino High School in 1985. She has lived for the past five years in La Selva Beach and was the director of the YMCA Child Car Center at Paradise Valley School in Morgan Hill. . . .

Joan Perry, a Los Gatos business-woman and author of A Girl Needs Cash, is speaking to Cupertino Rotary on March 25. The book emphasizes the importance of women taking responsibility for their own financial security. Joan has received wonderful coverage on local and national television stations. Her husband, Ron Lykins, is a past president of the club. It's a meeting not to be missed. . . . Keep in touch. Phone 252-1288, fax 252-5780, or email cupscoop@aol.com.
