Sheriff's Report

Cupertino senior became victim of scam

The Sheriff's Department is warning citizens after an elderly Cupertino woman was the victim of a repair-scam artist last week.

A man representing himself as a city of Cupertino employee contacted the woman at her residence on the 2000 block of Alves Drive at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17. He told her that the city was repairing the sidewalk and that he would need a $200 deposit from each resident to contribute to the project.

The woman became suspicious and told the man she had no money. After he left, the woman said, an envelope containing $500 in cash was missing from the house.

A second suspect came to the door and spoke with the man during his negotiations with the woman.

The first suspect is described as a male Caucasian, about 45 years old, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. He had black hair and a black mustache, and he was wearing a white T-shirt and black pants. There is no description of a vehicle or of the second suspect.

Anyone with information regarding this or similar incidents is urged to call the sheriff's Westside Substation at 867-9721.
