And it's enough to lead Homestead to victory

David Krause certainly knows his way around the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course ... or at least half of it.

Krause, a returning star for the Homestead golf team, toured nine holes at Muni with a one-under par 34 to lead the Mustangs to a 151-184 win over Cupertino in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.

High school teams play just nine holes in regular season matches, and Krause managed to finish his nine under par and well ahead of the competition.

Homestead teammates Eric Domke and Geoffrey Bazinett were Krause's nearest competition. The two each finished at 38, four strokes behind Krause and three strokes off par pace. Homestead's John Lee rounded out the top four with a 41.

Sophomore Jason Leong led the Cupertino effort with a five-over 40 at Sunnyvale. Koji Mitchell finished with a 42, followed by David Watkins at 44 and Jeff Scott at 58.

The Mustangs, 4-2 in the division, had opened the week with a 159-176 win over Mountain View at the Shoreline Golf Course. Domke carded a one-over 37 to lead the Homestead effort.

Krause came through with a 39, followed by Kurt Dodge at 40 and Lee at 43.

Cupertino, meanwhile, opened the week with a 163-182 loss to Fremont at Sunnyvale Muni.

Leong led the Pioneers with a 41. Mitchell fired a 43, Watkins finished at 44 and Scott shot a 54. Cupertino slipped to 0-5 for the year with the two losses last week.

In other local action, Monta Vista lost a 153-160 decision to Los Gatos in El Camino Division competition at the LaRincoñada County Club. Tyler Kitano led the Matadors with a two-over par 36.

    Boys Volleyball

Josh Cavin pounded down an impressive 29 kills to lead the Homestead boys volleyball team to an exciting 15-5, 15-8, 14-16, 15-8 win over Fremont in De Anza Division action last week. The Mustangs are now 4-0 in division play and 9-1 overall.

    Baseball

The Cupertino baseball team split a pair of games in the De Anza Division last week, falling 7-1 to Wilcox and pulling out a 6-5 win over Milpitas.

Kyle Haberman doubled and picked up the mound win in the tight 6-5 win over the Trojans. Andrew Ravadge and Scott Harper also doubled for the Pioneers in the win.

Cupertino scored a run in the third to take an early lead, but rallied for four in the fifth and another run in the sixth to go up 6-0. It turns out the Pioneers would need every one of those runs when the Trojans picked up five in the home half of the seventh. But Cupertino managed to hang on for the 6-5 win.

The Pioneers saw their division record leveled at 3-3 later in the week after a 7-1 loss to Wilcox (5-0 in league, 13-1 overall). Ravadge doubled to lead a four-hit attack for the Pioneers, who slipped to 5-6 for the season.

Cupertino will host Fremont on March 29, 3:30 p.m., before opening play in the Valley Christian Crown Classic March 30 at Bellarmine. The Pioneers will meet Fremont at 12:30 p.m. before taking on the Bells at 3:30 p.m.

Homestead won just one of three games last week in El Camino Division play. The Mustangs knocked off Santa Clara 3-2 on Saturday, but then fell 11-7 to Los Altos and 5-3 to Palo Alto to drop to 3-4 in the division and to 5-6 for the year.

Brad McGee singled and ripped a solo home run to lead the Mustangs to the Saturday win over the Bruins. McGee was also the winning pitcher, combining with Jordan McKim to flip a 3-hitter. McGee evened his mound record at 1-1 and McKim came on in relief to pick up his third save of the year.

But that win would turn out to be the highlight of the week for the Mustangs. Homestead lost a 5-3 heartbreaker to Paly, then dropped an 11-7 slugfest to Los Altos.

Bryan Beres doubled and Bryan Silverman knocked in two runs, but the Mustangs lost 5-3 to the Vikings.

Paly jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, but Homestead tied it with three in the sixth. The Vikes rallied for two in the bottom of the sixth, though, and held on for the win.

McGee doubled and homered to drive in a couple of runs, but Homestead lost the 11-7 nod to the Eagles. Silverman had three hits to knock in two runs and Beres also had three hits.

    Softball

Tracy Motzny whirled a no-hitter to lead Lynbrook to a 3-0 win over Gunn, then came back to throw an eight-inning 3-hitter to lift the Vikings to a 3-1 win over Saratoga.

Motzny opened the week by blanking the Titans on no hits. She also led the bat attack with a single and triple. Julianne Cadden also had two hits in the win.

The Vikings ran their record to 2-0 in the El Camino Division and pushed their season mark to 6-21 with the extra inning win over the Falcons. Motzny struck out 15 as she ran her pitching record to 6-1.

Jill Nixon singled and doubled to knock in two runs. It was her two-run double in the eighth that gave Lynbrook the lead; then Motzny struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth.
