Mary Ellen Chell is woman of year

Citing her work on behalf of low-income families, advocacy for affordable housing and years of helping alcoholics through recovery, state Sen. Byron Sher announced last week that Cupertino Community Services executive director Mary Ellen Chell is the 11th Senate District Woman of the Year.

Chell accepted the award at a ceremony Monday at the state capitol, along with the women of the year from the other state senatorial districts.

Chell, 50, lives in Cupertino and has worked at CCS for the last five years. Before CCS, Chell, who celebrates her 20th year of sobriety this year, worked as executive director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

"It's only through the grace of God and the love of my husband and friends that I get anything accomplished," Chell said.

    District celebrates 75th Anniversary

Hundreds of parents, students, alumni and supporters of Fremont Union High School District on March 26 thrilled to the sounds of the district's 75th Anniversary Celebration at the De Anza College Flint Center in Cupertino. The event featured four major ensembles directed by FUHSD employees who also are district graduates, as well as four performance dance groups advised by district graduates.

Steve Wozniak of Apple Computer, a Homestead High Graduate, served as distinguished emcee of the event and conducted the student band in a performance of "Stars and Stripes".
