Matadors win to even record
Monta Vista wins in golf, tennis
By DICK SPARRER
The league season got off to something of a rough start for the Monta Vista baseball team.
But three straight wins seem to have smoothed things out for the Matadors in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
After three losses to open the league season, the Mats have won three in a row to even their league mark at 3-3. Monta Vista posted back-to-back wins over Los Gatos, then edged Milpitas 7-6 last Friday.
The win was the second straight one-run decision for the Matadors, who had opened the week with a tight 5-4 victory over the Wildcats.
Dustin Realini belted a two-run homer and Casey Wilms singled and tripled to lead the Mats to the important win over the Cats. Ryan Latshaw also tripled in the win.
Monta Vista jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Gatos, but the Cats answered back with two in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
The Matadors tied it with two in the fourth, though, then won it with a run in the fifth.
Jessen Grant was the winning pitcher for Monta Vista.
The Mats evened their season record at 5-5 and their league mark at 3-3 with the 7-6 win over Milpitas to close out the week.
The Matadors slapped 12 hits to help Artist Battle pick up the pitching win against the Trojans.
Realini and Nathan Rutter each singled and doubled and Wilms had two hits to lead the offensive attack for Monta Vista.
The Matadors were touched for three runs in the first by Milpitas, but they answered right back with four in the home half of the first.
The Trojans scored two in the second and one in the third to lead 6-4, but Monta Vista scored a run in the third, scored again in the fifth to tie it and scored the game-winning run in the sixth.
Cupertino lost twice last week in the De Anza Division, falling 18-16 to Milpitas and 10-3 to Fremont.
The Pioneers are now 1-3 in El Camino play.
Homestead dropped a pair of close games last week, falling 7-6 to Mountain View and 9-7 to Santa Clara to slip to 1-4 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
The Mustangs, 4-4 for the year, will host Gunn on March 28 and visit Palo Alto on March 30 in a couple of 3:30 p.m. games.
Lynbrook lost its only game last week, falling 13-2 to Los Altos in El Camino Division play.
Golf
Nick Bailey, Dustin Anderson and David Kitano helped the Monta Vista golf team to three wins last week, two of them coming in De Anza Division play.
Bailey fired a three-over-par 37 to lead the Matadors to a tight 210-212 win over Los Gatos in a nonleague match at La Rinconada Country Club to open the week.
The Matadors came back with a 212-236 win over Homestead in a league match. Anderson and Kitano each carded a 39 on the par 35 Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course.
Monta Vista pushed its league record to 6-1 and its season mark to 9-1 with a 190-214 win over Fremont later in the week. Anderson and Bailey each shot 38s at Sunnyvale Muni.
Monta Vista had suffered its only loss of the year in its first match last week. The Mats lost 212-228 to Los Altos at the Los Altos Country Club. Anderson fired a four-over 40 and Bailey finished at 42.
Over in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL, Cupertino lost twice last week to Lynbrook despite solid scores by Mohammad Gorjestani and Scott Mueller.
Tennis
Ben Bartels, Adam Horvath and Robert Yee each won in singles play to lead the Monta Vista boys tennis team to a 6-1 win over Saratoga last week in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
Bartels won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to start the Matadors on the road to their fifth straight league win. Monta Vista is 10-2 for the year.
