Richard Shen wears No. 13 for the Lynbrook baseball team.

But unlucky 13 was anything but for the senior infielder last week. Shen lashed out five hits in two games to lead the Vikings to back-to-back wins in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Shen singled and tripled to help the Vikings to a 7-2 win over Homestead to open the week, and he came back with three hits in a tight 5-4 upset win over first-place Gunn two days later.

The two wins helped the Vikings improve to 4-8 in the division and to 5-9 for the year.

Shen was the hitting star, and Brandon Bencomo and Brian Seip shared the pitching duties in the win over Homestead to open the week.

Bencomo and Seip limited Homestead to just five hits in the game. Bencomo picked up the mound win, improving his record to 2-0, and Seip came on to get the save.

Shen had the two hits for the Vikings. Eric Barnes doubled and Brodie Maag knocked in two runs for Lynbrook.

Gary Mullins had two hits for Homestead in the loss.

Shen came back with three hits, and Seip singled and doubled, to lead the Vikings to the impressive win over Gunn two days later.

Matt Fratus chipped in with a double, and he was also the winning pitcher for the Vikings. Fratus is now 3-1 for the year.

The loss to Lynbrook was the first of two league losses for the Mustangs last week. Homestead dropped a 3-0 decision to Mountain View later in the week, despite a strong mound showing by David Attard. The senior right hander tossed a seven-hitter, but his teammates could support him with just a pair of singles.

Homestead, 2-10 in the El Camino Division and 7-10 for the year, opened the Lions Tournament with a 10-7 win over Palo Alto last weekend.

Brad Dougherty doubled and homered to knock in two runs for the Mustangs in the tournament win, and Brandon Schroder doubled and tripled.

Bryan Silverman had two hits to drive in three runs in the win, and Mullins and Attard added two hits apiece. David Dreyfous and Anthony Torres each slapped doubles for the Mustangs.

Bryan Skitt was the winning pitcher for Homestead, pushing his season record to 2-3.

The Mustangs continue tourney play this week. They were to host Gilroy on Monday, and will take on Mitty on April 19, 3:30 p.m., at PAL Stadium.

Cupertino won twice in the De Anza Division last week, beating Fremont 4-2 and Milpitas 12-11. The two wins helped the Pioneers jump to 5-6-1 in division play and to 7-11-1 overall.

Brandon Clark went the distance to toss an eight-hitter in the 4-2 win over Fremont and came back to pick up the save in the win over Milpitas later in the week.

Mike Runfola singled, doubled and tripled to drive in two runs in the Cupertino win over the Trojans. David Perreira had three hits to knock in five runs for the Pioneers.

Josh Lockard had two hits to knock in a couple of runs and Ryan Hanson added two hits.

Scott Roche was the winning pitcher, running his mound record to 3-5, and Clark came on to get the save.

Earlier in the week, Clark had gone the distance to get the mound win against Fremont. He pushed his record to 3-4 with the victory.

Hanson tripled, and Perreira doubled to lead a six-hit attack for the Pioneers.

Monta Vista won its only game last week, beating Milpitas 4-2 to improve to 5-6-1 in the De Anza Division. The Matadors, who are 7-7-1 for the year, are just a game out of second place in the division.

Artist Battle and Jessen Grant combined to toss a four-hitter for the win over the Trojans last week. Battle was the winning pitcher, and Grant, came on to get the save.

Milpitas took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third, but Monta Vista took control of the game with a four-run rally in the fifth.

    Mustangs win

The Homestead boys volleyball team continued its winning ways last week with a nonleague victory over Mitty, but it was a win that didn't come easy for the Mustangs.

Homestead won the first two games 15-10, 15-12 but lost the third 15-11. The Mustangs won the fourth game to take the match, but Mitty strung out Homestead before losing 19-17.

Homestead improved to 24-0 for the year with the victory.

    Pioneers fall

Kathy Lefstadt tied for first in the floor exercise, and Selina Ang was third in the all-around, but the Cupertino girls gymnastics team lost 164.40-140.00 to St. Francis in the South Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Lefstadt scored 8.2 on the floor to tie Corinne Allen of St. Francis for first.

Ang ran up a solid 30.40 to finish third in the all-around behind Kelly Lawton (33.40) and Allen (33.00) of St. Francis.

    Mats sink Titans

David Kitano and Dustin Anderson sparked the Monta Vista golf team to back-to-back wins over Gunn last week in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

Kitano carded a two-over par 36 at the Saratoga Country Club to lead the Matadors to a 191-218 win over Gunn, and Anderson fired a two-over 38 at the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course to drive the Mats to a 204-207 win over the Titans.

Monta Vista is now 9-1 in the division.

In other local action, Lynbrook lost 172-179 to Milpitas to slip to 6-5 in the division, and Homestead lost 202-209 to Mountain View to fall to 1-7 in division play.
