    Motor-deputies three-peat at police competition

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputies Kim Morgenthaler and Ron Karrle, who are assigned to the motorcycle traffic enforcement beat in Cupertino, placed first overall for the third year in a row at the Pacific Grove Police Motorcycle Competition April 8-9.

The two deputies competed as a team against nine other teams in the annual statewide competition and were judged on inspection, speed drill, precision drill and overall rating. The team placed first in inspection, second in speed and second in precision. The competition is open to any law enforcement agency in the state with a motorcycle unit.

Now that they've won three years in a row, Morgenthaler says he and his partner won't be going back next year.

"That was our big goal, to do it three years in a row, and it's something that's never been done before," he said. "But now we did it and we're going to step down and let some other people have some fun now."

Morgenthaler is a 22-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office. Karrle has worked there for 18 years.
