Pabst resigns from the CUSD board
The Cupertino Union School District Board of Education presently sits one less member, after Roberta Pabst resigned. The move came as she and her husband moved out of the district to a new home in San Jose. Pabst was serving her second term on the board.
Beverly Armstrong, public information officer for the district, says the district will fill the vacant seat during its regularly scheduled elections this November. Including Pabst's seat, the board will have four positions up for election.
Pabst says she will continue to volunteer her time to assist with the district's bond campaign since she still lives close enough to remain active with the district in an unofficial capacity. She had originally planned to postpone any move until after her term ended, but "then we had an opportunity that we couldn't pass up," she says.
Pabst takes pride in the accomplishments that the board made during the six years she served on it, particularly the implementation of class-size reduction and the renovation of school sites. "We've done a good job of managing the board's resources," she says.
She has no fears about the future constitution of the board, either. "Cupertino has always been lucky to have lots of talented people who are ready to participate," she says.
Bank robbed by woman in red dress
A woman in a red dress walked into the California Bank and Trust on Steven Creek Boulevard close to 1 p.m. on April 17, walked up to a teller and presented her with a note demanding money. The note also claimed that she had a gun, but employees at the bank saw no weapon. People present in the bank describe the robber as a black woman in her mid to late-thirties, about 5 feet, 4 inches and 180 pounds. She wore a red dress underneath a white jacket, and had her straight hair tied in a ponytail. She had on a blue Dallas Cowboys cap and carried a beige purse with a flower on the snap.
"It's unusual to have females doing bank robberies," said public information officer for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, Sergeant Mark Eastus.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, and was last seen running towards a food market behind the bank. No one was injured during the robbery.
The sheriff's office will not release the amount of money stolen, nor will it discuss the status of the case. The department has not made any arrest as of press time.

The association has themed this year's event "Entering the New Century," and most of the performances will take place in Vietnamese. Some of the introductions will also be in English as well. The association has approximately 160 members, and about 65 will take part in the performances. Roughly 2,000 Vietnamese students attend De Anza each year.
