Celtic performer presents musical program for kids
South Bay singer and Irish harpist Barbary Grant will perform a program of traditional Celtic songs adapted for children on May 7, at McAuliffe Elementary School, 12211 Titus Ave., in Saratoga. The concert, titled "Keltic for Kids," begins at 2 p.m. and includes silly songs, sing-a-longs, Irish dancing, storytelling and special surprises.
For the past five years, Grant has entertained audiences throughout California with her acoustic arrangements of Irish, Scottish and Manx songs. Along with the harp, Grant also plays the piano, fretted dulcimer, bowed psaltery and pennywhistle.
Her studies of the Gaelic language have helped her to sing in the original languages in which some of her repertoire were written. "Taking time to learn lyrics in their native languages is just a small measure of my respect for this music and its heritage," Grant explains. Grant's debut CD, Brigit's Well, also will be available at the performance. On the CD, Grant is joined by Aimee Aul on flute, recorder and secondary vocals.
A donation of $5 per person or $15 per family will be accepted. Proceeds benefit the Cupertino Co-Op Nursery School, a parent-participation preschool in Sunnyvale. Refreshments will be served.
