There's no place like homeBy Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel It's Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF) gala time again. School Basket chairwomen Kathee Kraker and Jo Nixon continue to be astounded by the elegant school baskets collected for the auction at the 14th annual gala, this year hosted by Silicon Graphics. Lincoln School's Sandi Zander outdid herself with the "There's No Place Like Home" collection of home comforts for her school basket. For ticket information, call 446-2333. . . . Last time it was hailing golf balls in Cupertino--now we hope some of those lottery balls will land here. Turns out our local dentist Richard Popejoy's brother, William, has just been confirmed as the state lottery's new director. Think we could have some winners in Cupertino? . . . . Allan and Betty Bidwell support the locals wherever they go. Most recently was in Palm Springs, where our star senior softball jock, Morris Hosada, played five softball games. That's the good news. The bad news is their season's record is 1-18. No, that's not a typo, that's one win and 18 losses. In our book, Morris wins the award for best sport! Then the Bidwells were seen in the Roseville area, Allan playing golf and Betty shopping (again). . . . Exchanging vows in a most gorgeous setting in Portola Valley were Tommy Treleaven and Amy Mangum, who make an equally gorgeous couple. Seen partying at the reception was Matt Swanson, another successful Monta Vista High School graduate, who is living in Sacramento, overseeing 20 stockbrokers. The Maraschin family was whooping it up, along with all five of the Treleaven siblings, nephews and nieces and, of course, mom and pop, Bill and Donna. The good-looking couple, maid of honor Heather Swanson and best man Scott Koppel were a help to the bride and groom. Amy and Tommy are off to Cancun for their honeymoon. . . . The Rotary district conference was held in Monterey, and as usual, the Cupertino Club had the largest turnout (party animals). Surprise, surprise! On the scene were Vardy and Alla Shtein, Tom and Eleane Hall, Bonnie and Dave Stearns, Lynn and Larry North and Mary Ann Wallace and Joe Ribera, while sneaking off to shop were Greg Jow and his fiancée, Nannette O'Hara. President-elect Kathy Nellis was handing out sombreros, and brave enough to wear it was the chairman of the conference, the one and only Dick Lohmiller. His wife, Kay, was exhausted from helping Margie Hattery and Joanne Mansch with the spectacular decorations. Where were you, Lee Cunningham?. . . Phil and Jennifer Johnson have just become land barons in Saratoga and will move into this little cottage on 2 1/2 acres and raise--sheep? horses? kids? Or will they just count the oak trees? Cupertino is sorry to lose them, but when's the first party, Phil? Congrats. . . . Another new gossip groupie is Helen Myers! Thanks, Helen. . . . .The city did it again with the super-successful (weather excluded) city family picnic at Blackberry Farm. Bebopping around the barbecue were Steve Dowling, Mike O'Dowd and Don Brown. This is always a great annual community gathering, and we can't wait for next year--with no El Niño. . . . Announcing their engagement recently were Susan Jenson, an English teacher at Cupertino High School, and Roberto Rocha, an engineer with the Joseph Schmidt Company. The couple met at UC-Davis and will be married at Stanford University Chapel on Jan. 2, 1999. . . . We want all the gossip you send us, but be sure you leave a number where we can call for more information. We have missed some really juicy stuff--must be our machine! Call us back if your item didn't get in. Thanks for the input. . . . Keep in touch. Phone 252-1288, fax 252-5780, email cupscoop@aol.com.
