Caltrans, city plan ramp changes
In an effort to cut congestion, city crews are working together with Caltrans to re-time traffic signals at the Wolfe Road and N. De Anza Boulevard ramps to Interstate-280.
The city has been collecting traffic data that's used to create new timing plans for the intersections, which sometimes clog with cars trying to get on the freeway. The problem is especially bad for traffic trying to get on southbound I-280 during the afternoon rush hour.
"Some of the signals may appear sluggish, and we're aware of it," city Traffic Engineer Ray Chong said.
The signal timing changes are part of a major, city-wide signal upgrade program that began earlier this year.
Caltrans is also helping out by working with city engineers to coordinate the metering lights that let traffic onto the freeway.
Caltrans is also planning to make improvements to the Wolfe Road exit from northbound I-280 starting next fall. A department spokesperson says Caltrans will widen the off-ramp from two to three lanes and eliminate the free-right turn lane onto Wolfe Road in order to keep traffic on the ramp from backing up on the freeway. The $748,000 project will last about eight or nine months.
